Just wondering? Seeing as my notebook torched itself this past weekend I'm looking at options for a cheap system with a decent bit of performance for FS9 & considering going back to XP for the OS...
A penny for your thoughts...a dollar for your opinion!
Thanks...

Torched ?????
Gateway notebooks are good price wise, ASUS best performance wise.
Opinions differ, but DELL / HP are good brands. Just get a good processor, a good video card and sizable RAM.
Any of the latest notebooks will have these by default, plus a little extra. If you are planning to load FS2004 only.
Get the most often moved models as stores often attach rebates to them.

I have heard people say that FS9 has not been programmed to take advantage of multi-core processors as the technology was simply unavailable or unheard of at the time, the system was being developed. So, in principle adding more number of cores will actually hurt the system and and not add to performance. I must add that this is a opinion across forums and they also differ. There are many other factors while talking about end performance, and I will advise you to do some google search before you actually write the cheque.
FSX is programmed from ground up to take advantage of multi cores and should run better on multi core systems. But since you are not going that way, I would recommend going for a decent processor and not go for the flash gimmicks (if I must say). This way you can save some money and for FS9, it should be nice and smooth.
By all means, pls. protect your system from being torched ?? Thermal management is a extremely important part of laptops and they actually are not meant for the laps. For some other great tips, please read Tracy's tips on this recent thread (http://www.deltava.org/thread.do?id=0x15170 ).

Gurmeet I'm trying to decide whether or not to go back to a tower system or replace my notebook. If its a notebook I'm pretty fixed on ASUS, they have affoardble systems with 1GB onboard video ram. The question posed earlier was more leaning towards a tower system as far as my comments about cheap price & decent performance, and if I go that route then I'll opt to use XP for better performance in a strip down tower.
Luke...thanks for a point blank anwser on that...much appreciated!

Gurmeet, I owe you more than a few pennies, your input is much appreciated as well, especially concerning FS9 not being able to take full advantage of multi-core. That is something I'm going to have to weigh out in that I may infact want this syste to be able to take on FSX @ a later date, only trouble is that will in the end drive up the base core spec & therefore the price...
