Since my son is graduating college and boomeranging home in a couple of weeks, my FS computer, which is sitting in his bedroom, will be less available to me. For some reason my wife isn't keen on my putting the PC in the dining room. My best option was to take my spare OEM copy of XP SP2 and load it up on my 6-month old iMAC that is sitting in the family room.
To make a long story shorter, Boot Camp is great. Easy to use, not a glitch. Created a 32Gig partition, loaded Windows, hooked up to my network, and grabbed AVG Free. FSX took FOREVER to load, but that is due to the really slow DVD player in the iMAC. CH Pedals pop in no problemo, loaded up some fleet a/c and ACARS without a hitch. Can't use the rudder pedals (dog likes to lay under the desk), and VATSIM (wife constantly ridicules me and can't hear the TV), but that's OK.
Now for the good stuff: FSX looks fabulous on the big 20" iMAC screen, despite the wimpy GeForce 9400 256MB video card. I've got my sliders at about 2/3 (medium High) and FPS locked at 25, and I consistently see 22-25. I am shocked at this excellent FSX performance. As I said, the graphics could be better, but I have yet to tweak with nHancer and I haven't loaded UTX and GEX yet. Sound isn't great with that Realtek driver, but maybe I can play with it.
So....if anyone is wanting Santa to bring them a Mac, fear not. FSX works tremendously, and I'll bet that FS9 just plain screams. My only regret is accepting the default 32Gig partition--I'm already using 19Gigs, so loading big packages (UTX/GEX/REX) may be a problem. Two thumbs up!
