I had an XPS desktop in the past and yes, it would overheat all the time. I actually had to take the cover off of it and stand a box fan on full blast next to it.

It's inevitable. Your processor and other components can't handle the load of FSX, the only remedy is a hardware upgrade which is difficult in a laptop.

i have an ASUS G50V and usually run it overclocked with Active Sky, ACARS, Explorer with multiple tabs running, hardware plugged in and an external monitor connected by HDMI - i can keep my coffee warm if I keep it next to the laptop's side vent. their's another fan exhaust vent on the laptop's bottom that heats up the table. laptops get hot whether you're playing tetris or flying to tahiti. I often wonder if the excessive heat or the fact that I actually turn it off overnight (startup/shutdown cycles are apparently tough on the hard drives) is shortening the life of the computer and it's hardware/software and the registry.

I don't run FSX on a laptop but I know very well the problems laptops have with heat (I'm an IT guy). Personally, I like the cooling pads, especially the ones with active fans, from Targus and others. In my own experience I have found that they do help laptops run better and live longer, not to mention the fact that it keeps the laptop from burning your lap

To answer your question, I'm afraid I'm not a good one to ask if it's noisy or not. Back in my younger days before I was in IT, I served three years with a Fire/Rescue unit in a major city and as a result, I have some degree of hearing loss. To me they are quiet, but again, I'm not the right person to ask
As for your other question, yes, I believe the coolers make them last longer. The amount of heat a laptop will generate does put a good deal of thermal stress on the processor and hard drive. Anything that can reduce that heat will increase the computer's life, in my opinion.
Hope this helps!

I was going to swear off laptops just for those reasons, but I got a brand new HP dv7 and it runs very cool even during FSX, no cooling pad needed! I like laptops again, this does all I need for games and doesn't get too hot. I like laptops for portability and space is an issue for me, never realized of stuffed a 1200 square foot hose can get.
