Hey Guys,
I just finished my computer build yesterday...and no problems until now. I have been trying to install FS9, and whenever I open/close the CD drive the computer just restarts out of nowhere. Any ideas?
Jeff

Is it a SATA or a PATA drive. It is recognized in the BIOS? Have you tried starting in safe mode?

It is a SATA CD/DVD Drive. When I first booted the computer up, I had no issues and installed Windows 7 regularly. However, now the CD drive opens/closes and I can put a cd in or out, but it does not recognize it and it will restart without notice.

If you unplug the drive from the computer, do you still get the issues?

Well it might just be a coincidence with the drive. I would unplug it and verify that it is or is not the drive. And if it is the drive, then I would just replace it, its a fairly cheap replacement. You also could try plugging it into a different SATA port. Maybe the port on the motherboard is having some issues.

Would that cause a reboot? Also...before all this problems I switched the priority from the CD to the HDD- could that have anything to do with it? Any other diagnostic tests I can do?

Just start with the basics of unplugging it and see if you get the problem, if you don't get the problem, then its the drive, and try a different SATA port. If you have problems with the drive unplugged completely from the computer, then we will go from there. And changing the boot priorities shouldn't cause any issues unless you had some kind of bootable CD in the drive and were trying to boot from it and that causing issues.

How can I test it, once the CD drive is unplugged?

I unplugged the CD drive, no problems. The system runs perfectly, now, I'll plug the CD drive into a different SATA port, and I'll try to install FS9, then, we'll see if it worked or not.
