On VATSIM the Minneapolis ARTCC is hosting an upcoming event (Friday Night Ops featuring Farewell NWA), and on the VATUSA front page the event description mentions that the NWA ICAO callsign is being phased out. Is this true? Does anyone have information on the fleet conversion to all Delta colors, or has that already been done? I know just last month there were still many NWA-painted aircraft at DTW and DEN.

Just because the callsign and operations are being merged doesn't mean that all planes are painted yet. It is true they are officially operating under a SOC right as I type this.

Yep, until all NWA planes are in Delta colors, the planes still in NWA colors would say, for instance, DAL342, request IFR clr. to RJAA, in Northwest colors.

They are still operating with the NWA callsign.... Just heard it this morning and FA looks like they're still filing with NWA.

The thing is all the flights in the DVA schedule are still showing NW, so do we simply replace the NW with DAL and keep the same flight number?

Until we here diferently from Sr. Staff, I'd continue to use the NWA callsign in ACARS if you are flying a NWA route. I'd go w/ whatever the schedule has listed.

Although the single callsign date has not been officially set yet, there won't be a need to do that once they go to one callsign because of the single SOC.
The reason why they did the NWXXX in DL colors was to avoid confusion with the controllers looking out the window for a NW a/c operating under a DL callsign (still technically two separate companies) with the single SOC, it wouldn't matter anymore. The controllers know all NW and DL a/c have the DL callsign (US and AWE a/c flew under Cactus).

Yeah it's basically the same thing now as US and American West. They both are called Cactus, but different paints. Now Northwest and Delta are called Delta, but NW has a different paint on some planes.

The callsign will probably merge January 31, 2010 since that is when the reservations computers will merge and the Northwest name will cease to exist.

A little under 20% of the original fleet are still existing in NWA colors. I'd imagine these will be painted soon

How do you know that? I was in Detroit and Denver a few weeks ago and noted that there were still a lot of NWA-painted aircraft. In fact, both times I flew I was with NWA colors.

That may be, but according to Delta's website, now that the NWA fleet has been added to the "Delta" fleet, Delta now has over 1000 aircraft. So, 20% would be about 200 aircraft still remaining in NWA colors, so it's easy to believe that you would still see a lot of them in DTW where they are all routed through as a hub.

You would have had an accurate count if widget heads was still up and running. There's usually a DL/NW paint thread running on airliners.net. If I can find a recent one i'll post. But 20-30% sounds about right.

The call sign with become Delta when they cut the res system over.
There are still a few A32S,2 A333s, 1 753 and 4 744s in NW C/S. The rest that aren't(DC-9-30/40 and the 752 5500 ships) will not see Delta paint, and will be parked by years end. They will get stickers that say "opp by Delta Air Lines, INC.". (I am talking mainline only)
DCI is slowly but surely painting there planes. 50% of the SF3 fleet wont see Delta paint as Delta will be pulling them(and we are going to end up with out SAABs all together)
So of the DAL-N carriers are starting to do Atlanta routes, CP is doing a few flights out of ATL now so is XJ. 9E is going to start running more CR2 routes out of Atlanta also come FEB.

I do believe that Delta will keep a couple of Saabs. Delta used to fly the ATRs into HHH but now will use the Saabs because CRJs can't land there do to the runway length (4,300 ft or 500 ft shorter than EYW).

Dan,
DL has recently discontinued serve to Hilton Head (no mention of wheather it's seasonal or not). The problem with HHH is not really the runway length. The CR7 would do fine out of there; it is the NIMBYs. Strict noise rules is what prevents jet service to HHH.
As an aside, with EYW, the problem is take-offs. The CR2s don't have leading edge slats so their run is usually very long, especially when heavy and in the summer. We would send them down during the off season but not during the hottest times of the year.

It is seasonal, will be back in S10 with a SAAB.
