Happy New Year!
My saitek pz44 just arrived, and I must say I am a bit overwhelmed. 23 buttons detected by vista 64. I'm unsure how the best and least painful way is to set this thing up.
I know I should avoid using the saitek setup CD that came with it and that I should use the FSX interface, I guess, but I'm not sure what functions to assign to what button or throttle quadrant.
Any tips would be appreciated!

My advice is to not use the SST software. FS has the built-in joystick setup. It works fine...and really, unless you are going to use all the buttons, don't waste your time. You should assign them to what you like (as far as your preferences, how you hold your hands on the controls, etc...commonly used buttons, functions, etc.

thanks for the response andy!
I'd love to hear what you and others have assigned and to what. For example, FSX has currently assigned brakes, change view, elevator trim, flaps, landing gear, and droppable objects to the buttons on the yoke...but it hasn't done anything to the stuff on the throttle quadrant.
Do you assign reverse thrust to it? It also looks like there are 6 other buttons available on the throttle quadrant, anyone assign stuff to that.

I use FSUIPC registered with my saitek yoke, throttle quadrant, and rudder pedals. Here's how I have mine setup
Index finger button on left side (on the back): SB4 push to talk key
A1: Elevator trim up
A2: Elevator trim down
B1: TOGA switch
B2: Toggle Autothrottle
C1/C2: Reset view
Red button: Disengage AUtopilot
I only have one throttle quadrant (until monday teehee) so here's how I have it setup (LEFT TO RIGHT):
Black throttle: Engines (reversers configured to the red area)
Blue throttle: FLAPS
Red: Spoilers
Buttons:
Top left: gear up
Bottom left: gear down
Top middle: Autobreaks up
Top middle: autobreaks down
Top right: parking breaks
Top left: parking breaks
I highly recommend using a registered copy of FSUIPC4, as you can configure it to all of these easily, and the axis and so forth, and the throttles are a lot more accurate. Also required if you use payware like the PMDG (you cannot assign joystick buttons with PMDG, and using default FSX configuration for "AUTOTHROTTLE" and "Autopilot disengage" will not work)

skylar, do you have any problems with the spoiler acting funny or not retracking? I'm using FSUIPC to set it up too, but I'm not sure I'm setting it up right, either. In fact, if you know where to find a good FSUIPC manual, let me know

You have to set the axis correct for it. I don't actually have a guide I had someone sit down with me over skype and help me configure it lol.
My spoilers are set in revers to mimick a real setup, and I haven't had any issues with it.

Chris - your best bet is to set it up - right or wrong and try it...THEN go into Pete Dawsom's forums and tell him the issues you are having and how you currently have it set up...he is very responsive, and more apt to really help you if you provide him details rather than..."I have a registered copy of FSUIPC and it isn't working with my Saitek".
He is a great guy and huge asset to the sim community. So I would say give that a try.

lol. I guess hiding my ignorance is not an option
I might have to do that. I just tried setting up a throttle to do reverse thrust when it's down. for example..the black (left) throttle on the throttle quadrant...fsx sees it as button 21 when I push it down into thereverse area. so i used fsuipc to set an action for that...but now it always sees that throttle as reversed, so I go backwards on full.
As you say, I guess I'll just have to trial and error it.

ahh yes
Buttons and Switches
Joy btn should be 20(EDIT: This will vary on the order you setup your buttons, just make sure it says something in there :P), "SELECT FOR FS CONTROL" select "Throttle Decr" and save it
You then need to setup the Joystick calebration (it's either page 5 or 6) for throttles. Put it in the down position (the black lever) and move it all the way up, then all the way back down -- then hit SET.

THROTTLE (Direct) page one of Joystick Calibration
hit SET, then RESET.
then move it up and down 2 or 3 times. then hit SET
MIN should be -16380 MAX should be 16380
If it doesn't autofill it in, there is a SET button above that. For "MIN" move your lever up then back down to the "0" position (not putting it into reverse) then hit SET above "Min" it should now read about -16380. Do the same for MAX and you should be set
EDIT EDIT EDIT:
SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPER important:
Delete axis assignments under the default FSX Button configs -- THESE WILL CONFLICT WITH YOUR FSUIPC SETTINGS

I can't believe changing one button assignment has done this trouble, but would you believe that even when I recalibrate the throttle and delete the 3 control axes in fsx..well. I'm still stuck with reversers that won't shut off?
I did ONE thing, lol...one button and it has totally incapacitated my fsx.
I do appreciate your tips! Sorry to keep posting.

That is very odd.. Save the fsuipc settings, restart fsx, go back in, and do the steps all over. See if that doesn't help.
FSUIPC can be a bugger to setup. Weird that it's doing that.
Also for throttles, make sure you didn't tell FSUIPC to run the throttle in reverse mode (IE Up=down, down=up)

in fact, since deleting the axes assignments from the control axes tab in fsx, I see that fsuipc doesn't see the joystick anymore either.

that means you didn't calibrate it specifically through FSUIPC. Give that a whirl (DO it for everything including yoke)
Edit: IE, Axis assignment page.
Hit "rescan" and move your yoke all the way left, then back middle, then all the way right. then assign what axis it is on that page. Do that for left, middle, right and forward backward for Ailerons and Elevators.

that's done by the fsuipc program accessed through the add-ons window, correct? It was what I was doing before, and when trying to do it again (since removing axes in fsx) it doesn't see any min or max values when I turn/pull the yoke, nor when I move the throttle up or down. It's like fsuipc doesn't see it at all.
i put the axes back in fsx and now fsuipc sees it again (although it confounds me that on the aileron test, it sometimes gives a left (neg value of -16000) and the right side it sometimes does 16000, sometimes 10,000
argh....

you want to delete the ASSIGNMENTS in the FSX Settings, not disable the controllers (I am assuming that's what you are doing). FSX Buttons: Controller Axis. Go in and remove them in there, but make sure to keep the controllers active on the main page of the fsx settings.
I deleted pretty much every button configured in FSX, and only use the ones I need to setup (IE: Parking break, my PTT, changing zoom, etc.)
The sometimes 16,000 sometimes 10,000 sucks, but just keep trying to set it until you get closer to what I had. It does that sometimes. FSUIPC reads this better than fsx does, so using default fsx settings is worse

I think I did that assignment deletion as you suggested. I was in fsx settings/controls. the saitek was listed as the controller type, and then I found the event: ailerons axis and then I pressed delete joystick assignment. I repeated this for elevators and throttle. When I do this, fsuipc doesn't see it anymore.
Is that what you meant?

FSUIPC>Axis ASsignment.
Hit RESCAN RESCAN RESCAN as you move your yoke left and right. all the way left, all the way right.
Left section click a check box, put in "Axis Elevator Set"
Do you have teamspeak or ventrilo or some sort of voice program we can talk over? Would make it easier on us both

I want you to open the file I gave you, and see if you cannot get back your old file. Only copy the axis assignments and key assignments. I have a few extras in there like a PMDG747EngineStart macro which you don't have, as well as an MD-11 and a 744-British Airways texture configuration. Atleast try removing those. You may be stuttering because it is trying to pull up files that do not exist on your system.

Also go back through the configuration and make sure to disable the rudders if you don't have them. I have the saitek rudder pedals installed and configured
(IE specifically:
[JoyNames]
AutoAssignLetters=No
0=Saitek Pro Flight Yoke
1=Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals
)
Also go back through and setup the buttons how you want to. I have them configured specifically for the PMDG 747 and MD11, so I had to modify commands.
Also, if you want the PTT to be the black button (left index finger button on the back of the left yoke), set your SB4 PTT button (in the SB4 settings) to numpad 5. Hold the black button down, and talk away
Another edit: I am assuming you have FSX, so if you use FS2004 let me know (My FSUIPC is FSUIPC4, so if you have FS2004, it will be different, resulting in errors/stuttering!)
If you are infact running FSX, I also want you to do the update located on their website:
http://fsuipc.simflight.com/beta/FSUIPC4558.zip
Download it, and simply overwrite your FSUIPC4.dll file in the FSX>MODULES folder with this one. No additional editing is required for the update to take affect.
Further edit: You probobly don't need this now, but for button changes and re-assignments from what I gave you -- http://fsuipc.simflight.com/beta/SIMSAMURAI+FSUIPC+TUTORIAL.pdf
I'd suggest assigning everything to what you want, the file I gave you is just how I have it setup Do note that I have pretty much every button in FSX default disabled except for a select few (Pushback, jetway connect, zoom in/out my view, etc) -- I then went in and assigned the buttons I am using for parking breaks, etc.
Dependant on the A/C you use (I use the PMDG payware/lds payware) you have to setup some functions via their respective panel, as setting these under the default FSX settings will not work (autobreaks, trim, etc are prime examples). If you use default A/C or freeware, you can set these up via the FSX Default configurations.
If you want a full list of the exact keybindings I used to configure my yoke/throttle buttons to, feel free to ask -- or you can find them in the FSUIPC settings since you have my file

Please do let me know If you need any help, feel free to ask.
And not a problem! Glad I could be of assistance. I had just as much, if not more help when I first set it up -- always good to pass things on
