I am considering getting WideFS so I can run FSX in maximised mode, with DVA ACARS, SB4 and soforth on a laptop next to the computer. I just had a question regarding this.
Both of my laptop and desktop connect to my router via wireless connection, and these computers are OFF at night. Can I easily setup Widefs over this with both being wireless? Or would I have to physically connect these two computers somehow?
Also, is there some basic guide on how to make these two computers connect to each other? I have no idea how Widefs would connect to each computer.
I know my way around software/computer stuff, just never actually used something like Widefs.

Skylar, I have my main CP hardwired into my network. My two laptops that I use with FS are both wireless. I run WideFS through them and have no issues. I have run it the way you're going to with one main wireless and a secondary wireless - again, no issues.
Read the documentation, you MUST have a registered copy of WideFS.

WideFS will work over your wireless router as long as your network settings allow a connection between both computers over that network. I use WideFS on my laptop and fly on my desktop. No physical connection is necessary.
EDIT: Darn! Beat by seconds!!

When you start WideFS on your secondary machine - you will get a message scrolling across the top of your FS main computer - looking for WideFS or Waiting (can't remember), once they "talk" to each other - the connection is set - really it is that simple.
I also use something called WideView...I'll have to take a picture soon!

If I remember correctly, you only have FSX. Get Real Environment Extreme - ASA has some glitches in it.

ASA not good for the weather engine? I was looking primarily for a weather engine other than what REX has. REX's weather engine hasn't been totally accurate thus far, and I hear ASA+REX is a good combo

It all depends on how you set it up - if you have conflicts with FSUIPC settings, with default Wx settings and what you use to connect online with as well. I had ASA, but AS6.5 works with FSX. With FSX I run REX and AS6.5. For FS9 I run AS6.5 and REX for FS9 and couldn't be happier.
The issue that most folks run in to is impatience (not in-patient). It takes your computer a while to back up and reload all the new textures - and for some - 20 minutes of waiting on the initial REX build is too long. And then 5 minutes of Wx detection and loading during normal starts is too long. Then they don't like the settings, then this, then that. REX and ASA are both great programs - if installed correctly and you read how to set them up to work on your system.

well I installed REX textures a while back and haven't reloaded it, it works well that way
Does take forever to get REX loaded up, but the textures are 100% worth it!

As long as your computers can see each other on your home network (both in the same workgroup) Widefs is nothing more than the install of Wideclient and Wideserver. Wired or wireless makes no difference. The advice you've been given is right on. Do it... you'll be happy!
