Hey Guys,
I recently installed a new MB (P6T Deluxe V2) and a core i7-920. I have not over-clocked the CPU. The computer runs fast, however, FS9 runs very poorly and gets very poor FPS. I have a GTX295, and 8GB of RAM, so FS should be running great.
Any ideas?

Did you update the chipset drivers and the graphics drivers since the new mobo/CPU?

Try rolling back to the 185 series drivers and see if that helps you out.

I'll try it tomorrow. I should be able to run FS without a hitch...The computer runs great, but FS does not. I believe it has something to do with FS and the CPU/GPU...

Well, i have the i7-940, and fs9 frequently starts itself on fire, so i don't think it's the CPU (unless its defective somehow)

I have the same motherboard, CPU and graphics card. FS9 FPS are over 50 at max settings. My issue is my IAS gauge goes to zero at the strangest times. This makes the auto speed peg to 100% and next thing I know I'm buzzing SLC at 443 knts before I can tell my passengers to brace for <esc>. Somehow I lost voice too - got out of PHX just fine, but somehting happend enroute. I respawned at KLSC and applogized to the tower. Not sure what to do....let me continue to whine. So I fire up FSX, thinking I have to dump the FS9 plane, which easily has a FPS of 30, and I can't see over the eyebow on landing. The FSX and FS9 versions do not have the same flight dynamics when low and slow. That surprizes me. I wonder which one is more realistic?

Told ya FS doesn't like two GPU's. I don't know what to tell ya, roll back the drivers. Overclock the card, something. I know you went wrong with 8GB of RAM with the i7 so it is probably an incompatibility issue. i7 takes multiples of 3 RAM to be fully compatible like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365
It's just possible that it's a compatibility issue.

See it's my fault! He copied my preliminary idea, which I later changed my choice on the GPU (just playing with you of course hehe)
Scott I'm falling asleep now but I'll look for a solution for you later. Speed indicator may be the PITOT heat, I've had this issue a few times myself.
Also your first post said you have 8GB of ram So was just a typo.
The only real solution I can give is to try uninstalling FS9, removing all the folders, and re-installing. It's tedious, but it very well may have been an install issue when you installed it the first time.
Also, give this a shot: run FS9 as admin and in compatibility mode for either XP or Vista -- see if that doesn't do you any justice.
FSX doesn't like multi-gpu's (sad, I know) -- but that shouldn't affect your performance really.

Guys,
I do have 8GB of RAM. About the GPU, on my previous motherboard, FS ran better than it currently does with the 295. I'll try taking a 2GB stick out, and then I'll have 6GB.

I just remembered something, previously, I had the 195 driver installed, and FS ran pretty good. I just installed the 196...so now I'm going back to 195, and hopefully it will solve this problem.

How high is autogen turned up? That usually causes the stutters.

I don't know what to tell ya, Jeff, sorry. This is definitely a hardware incompatibility issue but I just can't figure quite where. I think it has to do with your RAM and processor but there is no way I know of to test that besides to go out and by some compatible RAM.

Well it seems you've had bad luck with the two upper end cards so I recommend you go for the 1792MB GTX 275.

From what I know, the GTX295 is two GPU -- so I'd say the GTX285 2GB edition would be fine?
I'm going with the ATI 5870 specifically for eyefinity ^_^ Should run well

I'd be cautious with ATI, as well Jeff. Since we're not even sure that it's a video card issue I'd try to stick it out with the GTX295. Possibly try new or different RAM, overclocking the processor, etc.

Nicholas, I returned the GTX, as today was the last day (before 30 days) that I was able to return it. I returned it as I did not want to be stuck with a (broken) $550 dollar graphics card, and not be able to return it. I have heard some great things about the ATI5870, and I read that it out-performs both the 285 and 295.

It certainly does out perform the 285 and 295 for gaming. But simming is a whole different beast. Nvidia is typically the one who out does ATI in this realm because of the massive amounts of vRAM and it's memory interface. If you take a look at the 2GB GTX 285 it has 2GB of vRAM at 2484MHz, while the ATI5870 has only 1GB at 1200MHz as well the ATI is only 256-bit memory.

I have all the other parts, but haven't purchased the GPU yet -- so an interesting discussion.
I am getting an i7 920 6GB DDR3 RAM, and either the GTX285 or the ATI 5870 -- performance wise I want to be able to have both monitors instead of paying the $300 for the DualHead2Go switch.
Would the performance hit be THAT much that the ATI wouldn't be worth it?

Nobody is stopping you from using the 5870, but don't be surprised when you see the same results. The more I think about it, the more I believe it's an incompatibility issue between your RAM and CPU.

Exactly. I believe your 8GB is a reason why. It's not a tri-channel RAM therefore not able to successfully communicate with the i7.

the ATI is GDDR5 as well I believe. Are you really saying that the ATI won't provide enough power for FSX?

ATI5870 was designed for today's most top games that can actually take advantage of that GDDR5 RAM and DX11. It's a waste of money for FSX because it will take advantage of the added vRAM and RAM speed provided by the GDDR3 Nvidia cards.

Nicholas- I'm praying it will. Im going to go with the RAM you recommended, as well as an ATI5870. Hopefully, I pray, it will all turn out amazing. Then, our next "help session", will be how to overclock this bad boy

well the main idea behind the ATI card for me is to run it in Eyefinity across my two 22inch monitors. Would it be THAT big of a performance hit, taking into account of my other specs? I wouldn't think it would be that big of a hit.
Edit: http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=263062 interesting

ATI is so much easier to use in terms of multi monitors. I think most MODERN cards like the 285 and 5870 have two monitor outputs anyway.
EDIT TO YOUR EDIT: That test was done with a 1GB GTX 285 from what I understand.

I don't care about two outputs, I'm using EYEFINITY which means it takes the image, and renders it across the two like it's one big monitor.

Oh ok. Yeah EYEFINITY makes that easier. I can think that because it must render it over two screens like that it may give you a performance hit, but more than likely it will barely be noticeable.

Yep! You could also just run two outputs to the two monitors and get it configured if push comes to shove.

Good luck, Jeff! Hopefully between the RAM and the new card you'll be up and running where you should be. I just thought of this, if you're running FS9 it can only use one processor core so you i7's other cores are going to waste. That's another good reason to overclock it.

Nicholas- I really want to overclock the i7 (when I have all the parts)! I just am confused with the settings (and multipliers)...I have an H50 water cooler; so I should be fine. With the i7, how do I overclock? What settings are essential?

Overclocking is not my expertise and I don't want to lead you the wrong way and somehow blow up your rig, so I will redirect you here - http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/ - it's an amazing forum with amazing info.

If I remember correctly, the i7 is actually really easy to OC as you don't have to really deal with FSB. I'd also recommend the link Nicholas provided
