Dear All,
My PC set up is:
CPU - Intel Quad CPU Q9450 @2.66 Ghz
8.00 GB ram
ATI Radeon 5850
Running Windows 7 Home Premium
So, as you can see, the PC is quite powerful.
However, when I run FS2004, my average frame rate is about 22 FPS.
I use gamebuster to remove surplus programs, so I don't have a lot of other stuff going on.
Any idea why my frame rates are so low?
Best regards,
Peter Keenan

Overclock your processor, that is likely the culprit. FS9 can only use one processing core so just one out of the four at 2.66GHz is rather slow for FS9.

Have you tried running any of the tweaks you can find searching around in the forums or the resources?

I've tried the various tweaks and it doesn't run any faster.
I had 2 failures of nViidia cards, so I'm trying the ATi card.
At the same time, I've gone from Vista to Windows 7.
I'm going to install XP Pro as a dual boot and see if FS9 runs any faster.
I'm a bit reluctant to overclock the CPU at this time.
Thanks for the replies.
Best regards,
Peter

I've gotten FS9 to run on 2 cores. What you do is when FS9 is running, open up task manager and click on the process tap. right-click on fs9.exe and select select affinity. all 4 cores should be selected and click ok. restart fs9 and it should use the cores. It has always seemed to work even though all the cores already seemed to be selected.

FS9 is single threaded, and therefore can not be run on more than 1 core.

Not exactly (technically) ...
Coding a application to have multiple threads and coding it to take advantage of multiple core in a CPU are 2 different things altogether ..

Yes and No .. that's what I have also heard ... Certainly it can run on single core systems also ... just that in modern times it may not make sense to do so ....
FS9 was designed at a time where the concept of multi core was not commercially widespread .. I guess at that time the added complexity of handling multiple cores in a CPU might not have made (commercial) sense to the development team ...
When FSX was being designed, It was evident to the development team that multi core is the future of computing so FSX was designed from ground up to take advantage of multiple cores in a system ..

Dear All,
I've managed to get somewhat decent frame speeds by using the Windows 7 basic desktop.
However, one interesting thing that I've noted that towards the end of the flight, the motion of the aircraft is smooth, then hesitates, then goes smooth again, and repeats this phenomenon even though FS9 is running at over 40 FPS.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
Best regards,
Peter Keenan

What I meant was, it will only utilize 1 core. So you can have a quad-core CPU, but it will still only use 1 of those cores. Unlike FSX which will use 2 cores.

Andrew, I always do that for my FS9. I have Pentium D (Dual-core). But after I do this tweak, the graph for core 1 is still at the 'peak' and the graph of core 2 is less than half, about 1/4. What, I mean is that they don't look equalized.
P.S: I am using windows 7

It could be that is the way the processor is designed to work as one cor picks up the overload.

Just checked on my core i-7. Affinity is set to all 8 threads, and while CPU 0 is at peak, there is some activity on the other 7. So, basically, they are ALL doing something.
With FS9 I'm between 35 and over 100 FPS (depending where i'm at)
With FSX it's between 22-45

Go to the display settings on Flight Simulator and set your frame rate to unlimited, that is how I get my 60 fps average and my spec are; Core Duo Centrino 2.13 Ghz, 4GB RAM, 1GB GT 130M GPU.
hope it helps,
