Hello,
Windows 7 64Bit.
I was practicing some touch and go's in FSX today, when I noticed every time I touch down, the smoke effect is just black bocks. So, I decided to insert disk 1 of FSX and run the repair option. Afterwards, I started FSX, and something popped up saying "A Fatal Error Occurred, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem" I tried starting up FSX a couple more times, but same result. I did a restart of the computer, only to find the same result when I started FSX again. So, I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction of what I should do next. Thanks

Check your video drivers.
Clean out the old ones and install the latest newest ones if you have a late model card. If your card is over 3 years old install drivers from a year ago, not the latest.
Check to see if you have the bloom option on - see if that changes anything

Ok, Video Drivers are good, and bloom was off...
I think what happened is I might have accidentally deleted a file in the effects folder. Should I uninstall FSX and reinstall? I was hoping running the fix option would work but it didn't.

I also had this same problem, and for me, it was because I had the DVA 767 panels installed. If you have them installed, here's how I got around the problem.
1. Move the 767 panels/aircraft to a temp directory (move the whole folder).
2. Start FSX
3. If you want to use the 767 panels and aircraft, then move them back to their proper place.
It's kind of a hassle, but it worked for me. I permanently have them removed, unless I want to use the DVA 767 aircraft. Many of the gauges are not compatible with FSX.

Hi Kerry,
While I dont have the 767 installed, the only other DVA aircraft I have loaded is the EMB-120.
Unfortunately, I cannot open FSX, so thats where I'm trying to start. My first goal is to get into FSX and then worry about the blocks.
Would I need to do a complete reinstall of FSX?

It would seem to me that you should reinstall fsx in full

I am having the same problem with my version of windows 7 64-bit. I am able to play fsx but 10- 40 min into the flight i get a fatal error and its boots me out. I am installing the new version of dirext X and patches SP1 & SP2 prior to add-on Acceleration and will let you know if that fixes anything.

identical problem as alex. I've maybe never been so frustrated..... I don't even know what to do at this point. I'm ready to scrap it all and go back to Vista - a lot of what I've read over the past couple of weeks is that FSX and 64bit Win7 is a potentially disasterous adventure. They just don't play well together. I'm finding a ton of stuff online about this, but in Delta VA land - it feels like something of a minor issue. I'm confused. and I don't know what to do. Tonight, I'm going to try the 'Vista uiautomationcore.dll' fix. Then after that, the 'turn down my display resolution' fix.
I'm tinkering more trying to get a 30min flight done without a crash to desktop instead of tinkering on how to get 25fps instead of 15fps. It's the wrong kind of frustration.

Hey guys think I might know this one. I was having fatal error after fatal erro. After looking in the event veiwer I found it was the sim1.dll everytime.
First you need to go where your fsx.cfg file is located. There will be a file there called dll.xml
right click and open with notepad
select all the text and past it into the block located on this page http://flightsim.apollo3.com/utils/dllxmlorder.pl
Then click rebuild XML file
Now just copy and past that text back into your dll.xml file.
For some reason if you have FSCopilot and FSInn installed it wreaks havoc with other addons sometimes. I have been using FSX for almost 2 years and suddenly started getting all those errors one day after installing Orbx PNW. Did alot of troubleshooting and when I tried this it fixed my sim.
Hope it helps.

Randy - I have no idea what that dll.xml program does or what that fix is. I just gave it a shot because I downloaded a freeware from Orbx (2S1). After I ran the reorder program it said: "Error Found! FSCoPilot Entry was missing from your configuration! The dllxml reorder tool is adding the appropriate entry, making it selectible." Ok - that's a good start. Then when I opened FSX two errors loading FSDreamTeam's KJFK that I was previously getting both never appeared. Ok - second good thing. Just started and restarted FSX - but my entire add-on menu is missing - adding the old dll.xml file back. Still confused.......
