Not exactly a aviation question, but with the extremely high caliber of people here, thought to seek advice.
Objective : Run a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server on Windows XP SP3 host operating system in the lightest mode possible without resource hog build up.
Background:
- Using Virtualbox in headless mode for running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Windows XP SP3. PAE/NX is available and checked. VT-x and Nested paging are available and checked.
- Using Ububtu for lightweight development and application hosting with middleware from Apache (ServiceMix) and applications developed on Spring and hosted on App Servers by Weblogic.
- X is not installed and not used. So, 3D accelerations, graphics, animations etc. is not a requirement at all.
- Host is a Windows XP SP3 on a state of the art HP laptop with a T7700. 64 bit extensions available.
- Active user of VirtualBox and VMWare Server. Have used Oracle VM (Bare Metal) and Xen in the past.
- Searched many forums, read quite a few manuals tip-to-toe and have been posting to many a discussion forums and user groups.
Constraints:
- Power hungry guest platform. Extreme efficiency is required on all aspects on the host and the guest part.
- Virtualization software should be high efficiency. Self load should be minimal and when VM is run, host OS should not be dragged too much (like VMWare)
- Free / GNU / Open source licensing preferred.
- Host machine is a day to day working machine with hundreds of other uses (including running FS and logging to deltava.org).
- No, I cannot completely switch to Linux. I have nothing that attracts me there, and I am completely satisfied and happy with my Windows XP. Besides I have paid Licensing cost to MS, so that's a investment that has to be leveraged rather than put in a corner. My full home and office network is on Windows.
Question: I need recommendations for running a Linux Ubuntu 10.04 on Windows XP SP3. VMWare is a resource drag and a NO for the application. VirtualBox is good but is developing a memory leak and after few hours of running (idle guest) requires a restart to free memory. Usual optimizations are checked.
I am actively seeking a solution for a light weight Virtualization software from a long time that is both powerful & efficient. Cost and support are important factors though not the deciding ones.
