First off, sorry about having a windowed screenshot, but when I tried to take one in full screen, it just showed up as a black square in MSPaint. Anywho, I've been having issues with FSX since I bought it in late winter/early spring. I've tried tweaking and even just liking it the way it is, but I just can't do it when my FS9 looks so good. As you may be able to tell, my main issue lies in the atrocious ground textures and the flickering (which you obviously can't tell from just a screenshot). The ground textures appear very grainy and just look terrible and very video game-like. I've searched forums far and wide and haven't been able to find much to help me out, so I thought maybe deliberately seeking out some help might do the trick this time. So here goes, my system specs and in-game settings are as follows:
Computer:
Gateway (can't remember model number)
AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core 2.4 GHz
8 Gig RAM
1 TB Hard Drive
Windows 7 64-bit
ATI Radeon HD 4600 set to 1024x768x32 (all sliders set to MAX in the Catalyst control center)
FSX:
Texture Resolution: High
DX10 preview mode: On
Advanced Animations: On
Level of Detail Radius: Large
Mesh Complexity: 77
Mesh Resolution: 10m
Texture Resolution: 60cm
Scenery Complexity: Dense
Autogen: Normal
Special Effects: Medium
I have no issues with FPS, with these settings I get around 30-40 on the ground at an airport with downloaded scenery. I figure my CPU should be plenty powerful enough to deliver performance, I just can't understand why the textures look so terrible. Also, with some addon planes such as the Flight1 ATR, no textures show up, it's just a white plane, which I also can't figure out. So, if anyone can figure out, or at least take a stab at, my little dilemma I'd be beyond appreciative. Thanks for your time and suggestions, I really appreciate it!

try and turn DX10 off make sure FS screen res is set to the same as your desktop. If all that does not work put everything on low then work your way up

In FS9, I get the same "grainy" textures when my MIP Mapping (Hardware tab in Settings) is set to anything above 5, on an nVidia GeForce 8500GT.
The white textures is your DX10 setting being "on", just turn it off and you should be fine.

Lets start by saying that I am no expert of FSX but here are a couple of things to try. Set all scenery terrain, water and scenery objects to their max settings. you might also try turning off all shadowing that isnt absolutely necessary. There might be some frame loss but the issue will be how much. Check it. It may be acceptable. As far as your flight 1 atr textures showing up as white, try turning off Preview DirectX 10. I also shared your frustration with FSX and the problems in getting it set up. I found a couple of youtube videos that covered the set up pretty well and took care of most of my problems. good luck and hope this helps

That pretty much did it, guys, thank you all very much! It's funny because I haven't even played FSX in over a month because I've been so frustrated, but now I can rest easy tonight. Thank you again!

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who helped me out with this. I messed around with the tweaks you posted and now I have a great looking FSX that I'm actually enjoying flying again! I've even started to buy some new addons for FSX, which I held off on until I got my problems resolved. The sim looks great and I'm getting a fairly steady 30 FPS (locked at 30). Thanks again everyone!

Andrew glad to see you've resolved and it's working well, I'm still with FS9 and have a lot of add-ons, I'm sure you have owned the two so what in your opinion makes FSX better and what would be the thing that makes me want to make the switch?

I have both fs9 and fsx installed and I like both but fsx has better terrain mesh right out of the box and it has a more realistic feel in the VC and the environment in general looks better out of the box in fsx.. The downsides to fsx are that it takes alot more computer to run it smoothly, and you cant "raise the seat" in the 2D cockpit like in fs9. But it does have the traffic on the roads and on the water which makes it a bit more realistic and the default water looks way better than fs9. But to be honest with you I still like either one and will use whichever one fits the flight that I'm going to make due to the availability of A/C or whatever. I have an E6600 intel and and an 8800GTX with 4GB of RAM and my average fps for most flights is around 13-14 in fsx but in fs9 I get a fairly steady 40 fps (locked at 40).. FSX is way harder to generate but a nice sim. The airport environment in fsx is alot better than fs9 also with moving airport vehicles and jetways etc.. But like I said I still like both and they both have their pros and cons.
Edit: I stand corrected on the raising and lowering the seat in the 2D cockpit. Thanks to my friend Alan Cluff for the info. You can raise and lower the seat in the FSX 2D cockpit by using.. Ctrl + Q to raise the seat and Ctrl + Shift + Q to lower it. I never knew that.. Thanks for setting me straight Alan.
Cheers..

I gave up on fsx, and stick with fs9 I have bought all the scenery and addons for fs9. I don't have the wallet to do it again for fsx. so there i'm staying with fsx til something unforseen happens......*and with me that isn't unheard of.* until it does...then fs9 is my baby!

I didn't care much for FSX due to performance issues but now that I built a new system with an i7860 and an ATI 5850 I get 45 to 50 fps with most sliders at 75%. I have DX10 preview unchecked. I haven't purchased any add-ons except that I upgraded my FS9 Level D to FSX.

Bill, I see where you are coming from FS9 seems to be the flagship of all the FS products I really am not sure enough with FSX plus the fact as you say I have gotten a lot of add ons for FS9 and it does run very well.
I no doubt will have to end up trying out FSX in the future though
