For me anyway...my computer is on the fritz...the dedicated drive with all my FS installations has "given up the ghost"...for good...so I may not be able to continue my FS career for quite a while...if ever...so I will be asking for a leave of absence...I will miss the DVA community greatly...
P.S. You were right Nicholas...the Queen is not one to triffle with...or cheated on...evidentially...
You take care now...Nicholas...

Unacceptable. Appologize to the Queen - make whatever deals you need to, make it right. Get bonus money from the parents of the kids you teach. Tell the parents you want a computer or you'll tell their kids that pi - 2.14; and for the advanced placement kids, you'll tell'em them the Universe may not be closed. Leave of Absence - denied.

My uncle who is an IT tech told me that if you put a harddrive in the freezer for a while and then run it again, it might work for a short time. Worth a shot.

I've heard this one as well. Stick it in for ~30 minutes, you get at the most ~10 minutes to pull data off of it.

I'm so sorry to hear that Robert. I hope you will eventually make it back into the air (I'm sure you will find a way). In the mean time I hope to see you around the site at least, what would we do without your very individualised sense of humor?
I will keep your 747's APU running until you get back so she won't be to cold and dark upon your return.
Keep the blue side Bob!

Having been a network administrator/IT Tech for more than twenty years, I can confirm this works in at least 75% of the cases. The reason is that the most common cause of hard drive failure is that the bearings start wearing out. They heat up, metal expands, and the hard drive doesn't work. From room temperature it takes only a few seconds to reach that "critical" heat phase. Now if you chill the hard drive, you're starting from a point way below room temperature, so it takes longer (about ten minutes, typically, like Skylar said) to reach the point at which it fails.
Now one thing I'd point out: I would put the drive in the refrigerator, NOT the freezer. I've found that while the cold trick works, you don't want it too cold. I've had it not work - and even make the problem worse - if the drive is too cold. I don't know why too cold is bad, I haven't read any literature on it. I do, however, have a theory: hard drives heat up quickly (fact) and if you start with a drive that's too cold the sudden temperature change can damage it. Sort of like freezing a piece of metal and then dropping it into boiling water. Not a good thing.
Hope this helps.

An IT guy in work also suggested the cold approach but also suggested to leave the side of the pc open and if possible face a fan towards the drive to help keep it cool. Might buy you some time to save your data.

Totally unacceptable Robert !
You don't give up in two second a community like ours just because your hard drive is fried.
I'm sure that somehow you can solve this problem and in the meantime still be around.
And if you really miss the flying so much (understandable) we leave 15 minutes away from each other and we can arrange a flight together.....but keep in mind that I'm the Captain !

Robert you can still post in the forums, my pc is currently not cooperating with FS at all and yet I'm still here. And if its just a hard-drive simply pop a new one in.

Don't give up, Man! I've blown up two dedicated FS drives before. It takes an afternoon or less to rebuild a new one - only a couple hours to build a new one to get back on DVA and flying with the big boys! Throwing one's hands in the air in defeat is non-acceptable, Man! But that's just me - if I can't put in at least one flight per day (VFR, IFR, whatever), I go all buggy and messed up.

Yes-it's not the end of the world to have your hard drive fried-I've lost some over the years-it happens-just always keep backups of important data away from your pc,not even on your external drive, just in case that fries, and keep your installation discs ,etc, handy somewhere 'cos you never know...I've lost very important data from not doing this.Anways, get a new harddrive, load your stuff, and get on the horse again!
