I'm trying to get into the DC6 rating and eventually would like to fly Hawaii to Cali. My question is how on Earth did they navigate this route? I now they didn't use VOR's the whole way. Dead reckoning? Nothing to reckon in the middle of the Pacific. Calculate heading... can do this but is this best option for FS9? Celestrial nav, probably what they did back in the day but not so sure that will work for me in FS9!
How to fly/navigate fleet DC6 from Honolulu to California (SFO closer but is LAX what was historical?)
I know I know use GPS or FMC... but that would defeat the purpose... might was well fly the baby boeing or larger...
Thanks!

E6B
Download real stars - and use the sun and stars from external view. It's doable. I've done it...I also had my handheld LORAN addon as well to back up my route:

Lindsey,
I have flown this route many times with the DC-7 and using GPS. If you don'tr use GPS, FSN, FSComander, or the like and you fly Hawaii to CAl, plot your heading, check the winds, make the proper heading corrections and adjust your ETA accordingly and you will get close to your destination (at least close to the main land) if winds don't change and you don't forget to set your compass periodically; however, going the otherway, and if you are too far off coarse and don't pickup any of the VOR or NDBs from the islands your in for a long swim.
Celestial navigation was used in those days.

Ok thanks guys. I'll dig out my E6B like Andy said and give it a go after I get my rating. Should be an adventure! Although I am curious to look into the star way... Why I'm I not surprised that you did that Andy!?

I've done quite a few trips in the old trusty DCs. I usually opted for night time flying for navigational purposes. Did it pretty much exactly how everyone suggests above. My longest flight was from Miami to Midway. The most difficult was FLL to Bermuda.

Lindsey, sorry I'm late to the thread.
If you really want to get into the weeds for long range navigation before LORAN and INS, you should install Dave Bitzer's and Mark Beumont's incredible bubble sextant. It's available on AVSIM and FLIGHTSIM. There are two files: the basic gauge and the addon chart. I would recommend both gauges. The installation instructions are fairly straight forward. The actual operation and procedures will take a little study--just tlike the real thing. The instructions are extensive and well written. Consider it a minnie course in historic long range navigation techniques.
There is also a simple drifmeter gauge that is easy to install but I can't seem to find a link for it at this time.
I've used the sextant, along with the virtual E6B and a home made plotting chart to fly the North Atlantic Ferry Route from Canada to Europe via Greenland and Iceland. I've also flown from Natal, Brazil to Africa via Acension, and from Hawaii to California as well as other South Pacific island hopping. It does take some work--but it certainly will challenge you as no other free addon can.
I guarntee you, even if you decide not to install the sextant, you will come away with a much greater appreciation for the skill of those old "Navs".
Here are the links:

Have fun!
