Picked up a new computer the other day for a song ($500 for computer and 19" monitor, AMD Athlon II dual Core, 750GB HDD, 4GB memory, nVidia 9200 graphics). So now I have the old computer cleaned out, and I am trying to figure out what to do with it. It's a little net top, runs an Intel Atom core, 130GB HDD. I was thinking file server under Linux. Anyone ever run into this quandary before?

With the 750gb hard drive in the new PC, not sure you would need a file server. Perhaps you could use it with Wide FS and run squawbox and a few other FS addons. I think I would just use it a s a little portable for email, and web surfing.

Or you can try and sell it, and use the money to buy a better video card

I've thought about selling it, but I'm not sure I'm up for the work involved. I'll admit to being in a fairly decent lazy streak of late.... I might end up just using it to stream some movies/music to my PS3.

I'd save it as as a backup if your usual PC gives out for some reason.

If you go the fileserver route, throw up FreeNAS instead (FreeBSD + zfs is awesome). Another option is just to make it a "charts" machine that sits next to your new box. Great for loading up flightaware/skyvector/airnav.

Thank God I kept my laptop, and didn't throw it out, cause my desktop isn't working, and now im FS9in on it. I miss FSX though, far better.

I've kept all my old laptops and desktops over the years - and I run my current simpit off my main desktop with two older PCs as my Navigation and overhead and center console drivers/processors for flight. I have an old laptop as well that I use for the internet stuff and I have about 6 screens of which 3 26" I use for the main "windows" and two smaller ones that display the gauges. I have a smaller touch screen ACER notebook that runs the FMC alone. My wife thinks (knows) I'm crazy!
