when one finds a flight and it says i.e. dva2999 leg 1. I get the first part what is leg 1 leg 2. don't most pilots need 2 legs to fly in a straight line, otherwise you'd be pushing on the right or left rudder the whole flight. but seriously what does the leg part mean. Sorry for all the mundane posts, I just want to play by the rules.

Leg is the same as a route segment. You can fly them anyway you'd like to. A Multi-Leg trip is one that may go from airport A to B to C to D or simply A to B.
So Leg 1 would be A to B, Leg 2 B to C, etc.

So just for clarification. Example I want to fly a 737 from Minneapolis to D.C. with a stop in Chicago. Do I book 2 flights and end the first at the gate in ohare or do I file it somehow via ohare. and if I do does it count as 1 flight or 2 in my log book tally

What you see in the schedule is a plane going for say Tampa (TPA) - Atlanta (ATL) with lets say flight number 1999 once it lands in Atl that same plane might fly to DC with Flight number 1999 which will make it leg 2 but most of the time what you see is that flight number not going on to the next destination. Most times Delta will use a numbering system where the Leg out will for say be 2000 and coming be be 2001 just a number up.

Yes, book two flights. If you fly on to DC you will get an ACARS error saying you are xxx number of miles away from your destination.

You end your flight and submit it. Then type in .draft in ACARS, and select the next flight.
