I know I'm going to get a few boo's and hisses for bringing this up. I just realized that I get credit for a "state visited" even if it's the departure airport. Should't credit only be given for states that are arrivals?

I know..just doesnt feel right to me. Don't get me wrong, i'm not judging. It just dawned on me yesterday that I got credit for a state that I never flew into. It was a departure for a checkride I had passed.

If you feel that way Norm then you can make sure you do all of your flying out of a hub and into the state you wish to visit or visit it again on you own time.

Thought of that after I posted the second time. i will just revisit those states before I hit the final one, which will probably be Rhode Island for me.

I have been chasing that too and had the same thought. So I made sure, for the exception of 1 that I flew into the state to get credit. My last one was tonight to Hawaii

I thought the same when I was going for it, but I did what Nick suggested and just landed in every state before I hit West Virginia (my last one).

I guess there are a few of us that feel the same. I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to things like this. Except for a very few, all my flights are contiguous as well.

I didn't like it because I guess you could theoretically accomplish it in as few as 25 legs (maybe somewhere in the lower 30s since I'm sure the routes won't be that perfect), and I always thought I got more out of 'touching dirt' in a state/country by landing at a unique runway. Taking off from a runway and climbing out to me didn't feel like visiting a state in the spirit of the accomplishment.
With that said, though, it shouldn't be the membership in the club and the title under your name that drives you to complete a task. It is nice to have the title, but I know that I've landed in every state (which I started before I found out the accomplishment existed), been to all of the countries in Central America, and have done other accomplishments just for myself. That's why I don't really think it's a big issue to raise -- If it means that much to you, don't hit number 50 until you've landed in all the states.
My extended 2 cents I guess. Not trying to sound soapbox-ish or anything, just felt like expounding further on what I said earlier.

Ironically...my very first flight with DVA in 2006 was KILG to KATL. I joined right after Delta started the flights out of New Castle. Even flew it in the CRJ. Actually, I only have 3 states to redo.. Delaware, Florida and Idaho. Im with you as far as the other Awards...just numbers. They dont mean a whole heck of a lot. I'm lucky if I can do 2 or 3 flights a week right now. My next goal is to get a rating in the DC8 and that will probably be it for a while.

I try, notice I said try ;-) , to keep my log book in logical order. I fly out of KDTW and always return there. This makes flying the 50 States a bit of a challenge and more fun. There are just some states you can't get to from Detroit so I fly to a state that does have a route to the state that I need. But I always return back to Detroit. You can look at other pilots log books and determine where their starting point (origin of flight) was and know how they accomplished the 50 States task. The pilots that earned it the hard way will tell you it was fun. The ones that started from a different state, each time, will tell you they accomplished the task. To me the 50 states is a fun way to learn how to plot a route, learn different STARS and Departures, become familiar with different controllers, and all while having fun. Sure you can take a short cut but you missed a lot of fun if you do.

Except for the online events I always takeoff from that last airport I landed at. I know that's not a rule but I thought why not. Flying back to the hubs a few times isn't terrible bit it's a flight.

Well, just to put it easily, lets say another DVA pilot flew you from that airport to the departure airport. hehehe Or you drove or took a bus, or even walk. I had my guy walk from Amsterdam to the departure airport for my 767 CR. That was long! Forest Gump still beat me.
