I'm looking into building a rig that can run FSX at its' full potential + extras. This is what I've built so far. Advice and ideas are welcome!
Motherboard: Intel GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128423 )
Video: GV-N450-1GI GeForce GTS 450 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125342 )
CPU: Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601950 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115211 )
Memory: CORSAIR XMS 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145324 )
Sound: DIAMOND XtremeSound XS71 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829111001 )
Cooling: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm Fluid Dynamic CPU Cooler ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134 )
Power: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 )
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227551 )
Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136795 )
My subtotal (before rebates and including a case for everything) is $1,251.89, but getting it to around $1,000 would be great, but not 100% needed.

Looks pretty good, but I have a couple of suggestions:
VGA Card- Maybe go for something like a 460/470 (just suggesting, not really necessary)
If you are trying to save money, you can drop the sound card, as the MB already has 7.1 audio built in.
Besides that, I don't really see anything else, just make sure that the CPU cooler can handle a good OC because FSX likes that.
Hope I helped,

Sound card is a backup after my current one died out of nowhere, but it's certainly still an option to remove it. Video cards I'm still looking at; the current one is just the one I have now for it. For the fan, it looks good enough for me. Thanks for your suggestions! Much appreciated

Not a fan of WD Caviar Black..can you sport a few more for a velociraptor? Just asking. Your rig looks very similar to the one I just built.

Revised my list. Changed drive and dropped sound card.
Drive: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000BLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Enterprise Hard Drive -Bare Drive ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136563 )
Subtotal (before rebates): $1,491.89
The new total is a bit high, but not overboard. Money saving ideas in other places are welcomed.

You might want to step up in size from 2.5" to 3.5" and save you $40. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136322&cm_re=velociraptor-_-22-136-322-_-Product

Does anybody have any benchmark data on a 10,000 RPM, 32mb cache drive vs a 7,200 RMP 64 mb cache drive? I elected to *not* get the Velociraptor in favor of the latter, 64mb cache drive (1TB), but am curious what sort of performance difference there is between the two?
I can tell you tat the OCZ Vertex 2 drive will be awesome. I run my OS only off of it and it is amazingly quick.
The cooler, if it's anything like mine, is going to be massive, so just make sure you've got enough room in your case for it (you probably do, but worth confirming). There's a pic in my PC build thread http://www.deltava.org/thread.do?id=0x1801b

I would be intrested to learn about the drives as well.
This is the case I picked: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121004

For now, the current CPU is adequate for me, but nothing is finalized yet. It's going to come down to a balance between power and money, with a bit more emphasis on power.
