I am going to stop procrastinating and finally purchase a new computer sometime in the next few months, my question is: at which point would the amount of processing power be overkill for FS9 and pretty much demand a switch to FSX. My CPU will probably be somewhere in the ballpark of 3.0-3.4 ghz, but probably most likely on the higher end (3.2-3.4 ghz) of that range. Also, what kind of FSX performance would I get with that speed, running REX and probably a few more addons eventually? If I decide to stick with good old FS9. Finally, I plan on salvaging parts from an old PC, probably disc drives, the graphics card, and the moniter, would you recommend for or against this? Are there any possible adverse effects this could have on my PC's performance?
I will probably just purchase REX for it and call it a day, and maybe some nice payware too.
Thanks,
Nathan

Sorry, I guess I had a typo, when I said disc drives I meant the CD/DVD drives. My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200.

Well, i use an old core 2 quad at 2.4 ghz from 2008, and i can run FSX pretty much fine, with REX and medium high settings, so if you plan on getting one of the new i7's or i5's, i'd recommend switching to FSX. Also, i'd highly recommend getting a new graphics card, since that card is getting a bit dated. Reusing the monitor is fine, but a new DVD drive is ~$20, so i really see no reason not to get a new one, but it's up to you. With a new graphics card and processor, i'd expect to see at least 40+ fps with addons.

Nathan, FSX is all about CPU/Ram. As long as you have a midrange video card you will be fine. CPU,CPU,CPU. Just my humble opinion.

Im sitting on an I7 870 quad with 8mb ram and a 580 gtx... Sitting on the ground at LAX with most of my settings maxed, my fps is anywhere between 12-28. Flying over nonpopulated areas Ive seen spikes over 200 fps. I havent overclocked yet so my I7 runs with that hyperthreading thing... Id like to see better fps in dense population but Ill just have to tweak a little bit.. Hope it helps
