I am probably going to end up purchasing a new computer sometime this summer and I want to hear y'all's opinion of what I want and what I think will meet those goals.
-I want a computer that will be able to run FS9 to the max, >30fps at all times with payware aircraft, REX, and nice, thick clouds.
-It needs to cost less than $900 (U.S.)

Why are you building for FS9? FSX will run twice as faster on that rig, anyway. FS9 cannot take full advantage of multi-core processors.

I don't know much about computers, but according to this, if you're willing to spend $900 on a computer than another $40 or so for FSX would be well worth it.

If the guy wants to run FS9, thats up to him. $900 will give you a great system for FS9. Im running a system that cost me ~$200 total and I am running >27fps using VATSIM, PMDG aircraft, Level D, REX, GE, AS6.5, UT, FsGenesis, FSDT scenery and FlyTampa scenery. I am one who it will take a LOT to get me over to FSX. I've got FS9 with soo many addons it looks as nice as FSX and runs smoother. And I wouldn't want to throw all that money I spent on FS9 out the window. Good luck!

I thought FSX was a single-core operation also?

Precisely. Instead of a moderately good system for FSX, I could get an extreme system for FS9, no lagging, stutters, or any of FSX's "fatal errors". I not only value FS9 for its performance, but also its stability. I do think that I will gradually add components that will allow me to give FSX great performance on this rig, hopefully a new GPU and CPU heatsink to allow me to overclock.

Hey Kyle could you please list your specs??? from your shots the other day they look amazing and for $200 you can't really go wrong....i have it maxed out also but only get 22-25 fps now and i used to get like a consistent 30-35
also with that system fs9 will run like a charm and i'd venture to say fsx would run pretty decently....im not exactly sure how well but it looks pretty good.
I like that setup and you can even install both fsx and fs9 and see what you like better!

I'd also like to see your specs. I'm using a pretty feeble laptop for simming right now, and was saving up for building a massive machine. But if you're getting that kind of performance for a few hundred dollars, I'd just as soon save the money.

Just FYI I run FSX on the Intel Core i5 2400, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GTX460. I have all of the FSX sliders to the right hand side of the page. FS runs smooth - I have it locked at 30fps and consistently get it

I'm running a system that has overall cost me ~400 and i'm getting generally 80-90 fps in FS9.. Everything is set to ultra high, payware planes, payware scenery, weather, etc.
Just sayin..

Neil and John, my specs are:
Intel E2200 2.2Ghz (OC 3.0Ghz) but before I OC it, it ran 25+ fps, Im just the FS junkie that likes to get 30+ frames
MSI G31TM-P21 Motherboard
nVidia 9800GT 1024MB
DDR2 4GB RAM (pair of the "cheap" RAM, no problems as of it!)
And I also can run ~80 fps ultra high settings, but keep it locked at 35 because anything over ~28 is pointless, as the eye can't see more and it just puts more of a load on the CPU. (25 is the official number but I notice when it drops below 28... superhuman? )
I also run O&O defrag, which really helps too. Might want to try the demo Neil.
Anymore questions, just shoot me an email!
Nathan, if you could find a great system for a lot less, think of all the addons you could buy for FS with the saved money!

Well, I would build just for FS9, but an FSX upgrade is something I plan within the next year or so, now that I hear that it would perform well. I plan to keep this rig for at least three or four years (maybe with some slight upgrades over time)
I think I will buy FSX to go along with this rig, and then buy REX for whichever sim I find I like better.

Wow thats pretty good.....i think the problem with mine is that mine only runs a 2.0 ghz and its and intel core 2 duo.....I mean i run full sliders to the right also but only get 22-25 fps and sometimes less.
And Yea i totally agree with you about being able to run fs9 without having to spend a fortune and use the money for addons

2.0 is pretty low for FS. One thing I suggest you do (besides defrag) is when starting up FS9, go to the task manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and then processes tab, right click FS9.exe, select "set affinity" uncheck both core 0 and core 1 and then reselect them and click ok. That will force FS9 to run on both cores. It helps with me obtaining the 30+ frames. When I don't do that, it will run at lower frames. Let me know if that helps your frames out!

Just FYI Nathan, the RAM you listed is a triple channel kit, and the P67 boards use dual channel. You also have to make sure the RAM is <1.5 volts for sandy bridge. If you can, go for 8GB in a 2 x 4GB setup, but FS9 should work fine on 4GB. (but FSX won't, so something to keep in mind if you plan on swithing over in the future.)

Everything looks good Nathan! As John said, the cables do come with the parts. The SATA data cables (it looks like there is a total of 6) will come with the motherboard, and the rest will come with/attached to the power supply (except for a few on the case that supply power to the buttons on the front.) Those are all great parts, and will serve you well.

Final (hopefully) questions:
Does the power supply provide enough wattage for four case fans and all the parts?
Are the reviews about Western Digital's products being horrible true in your experience? Should I avoid them?
Would this RAM work better?

That power supply will be plenty. All in all, your PC will only use about 400 watts under full load, so 600 is actually a good number. I have a 500GB Caviar blue drive I use for backup, and i just ordered a 1TB black for a new PC build I'm doing. They are well made, quiet, and the Blue has been running great (haven't tested the black yet.) The fact is, hard drives are tempermental, and you may get one DOA, but you just RMA it and they send you another one free. It's more about its handling on the way to your house than the manufacturer itself. I'd say WD is one of the better companies for HDD's. The RAM is a much better choice, since it is only 1.5 volts (the XMS3 in your previous post is 1.65, too much for Sandy Bridge.) Plus, the Vengeance looks better.

While we're talking about all this hardware, will a card with a 256-bit memory interface offer better performance in FS9 than a 128-bit one?

I now think I'm going to splurge and get the i5 2500, but I'm torn between the 2500 and the 2500K. I'd like to know the benefits (if any) of the added potassium.

John: 256 bit is a bit better than 128 bit, but the speed of the card and the chipset itself will make more of a difference than the memory interface.
Nathan: As I have been led to believe, the "K" simply means the card has an unlocked multiplier and you will be able to overclock it. The non K can be overclocked a tiny bit, but that is it. That is literaly the ONLY difference I can find between the 2.

Okay, I do plan on overclocking sometime in the future, so I think I'll sacrifice another $15 for it. Thanks
