Hey, all. I hate to admit it, but I'm pretty confused by the Type Ratings and Promotions stuff lately. I've read (and re-read) the PDF from the document library, but I'm still pretty lost.
I find the "Promotion Eligibility" page to be confusing. In the 737 row, I see "You are eligible to switch to or seek the following additional ratings (B737-BBJ1, ERJ-175, ERJ-190, ERJ-195, JS41, S2000) in this Equipment program." A few years ago, I passed the FO test as well as the Captain's test and checkride. I see the same for the 727 row, although I only passed the FO test/checkride and not the captain's tests. Both rows indicate that they include the additional type rating for the JS41. I just purchased this from PMDG, so am dying to fly it for DVA. However, I don't seem to have the rating to fly it. So, I went to the Pilot's Center, hit "Request Additional Rating" and, from the drop-down, selected the 737 option and submitted. Now the testing center indicates that I've requested an Equipment Program Transfer. But I haven't! The PC page at least indicates that it's a rating addition that I've sought. But, what is happening behind the scenes? What is being reviewed and what will I have to do to obtain the JS41 rating - particularly given that I've already been a Captain in the 737 program. How does the system know I wanted the JS41 and not the BBJ or something?
Thanks for any insight, guys - and I apologize for my ignorance on this one!
Kindly,
Jim

Jim, your request will show up in the list of equipment transfers, but when it is dealt with you will be awarded your additional ratings and not be transfered to the 737 program, provided you did in fact select "request additonal rating" and not accidentally switch equipment program. This should award you not only the JS41 rating, but all other applicable additional ratings as well.
Does that make sense?

Nicholas:
Thanks for the quick response. That definitely makes sense.
Somewhat related to this, I'm curious about the benefits of taking an FO test for an aircraft below my Stage. One example is the CRJ. What are the benefits (if any) to taking that exam?
Similarly, in the MD-88 row on my Eligibility page, I see "You are eligible to request but have not passed the Check Ride for this Equipment program." I passed the FO exam a few years ago, but I never took the Checkride. As a Captain in the 767 program, what does a Checkride in the MD-88 afford me if I'm already allowed to fly it?
Lastly, is it even possible to take a Captain's test for the MD-88 without actually switching to that program? I assume that it's not possible and that there is no benefit in doing. So it looks like I'm not missing anything there, right?
Thanks Again,
Jim

I'm not sure about the issue in your first question, since if you have the ratings you should have taken a CR, but for your second question you are correct. You cannot take a captains exam for an a/c unless you are in that program. You are not missing anything by not taking it since you are in the 767 program.

Well, I'm definitely allowed to file reports for the MD88 and have flown quite a large number of them, including one in my new Lago Maddog last night... I just checked the Testing Center again and confirmed that I have only taken the FO exam and never a CR in it. Not sure why that is, then...
Will I need a CR for the JS41 and others that come with the 737? I'm still confused as to why I wouldn't be able to fly those as of right now, having once been a Captain in the 737...
Thanks Again,
Jim

That aircraft may have been added to the equipment program after you'd left that program.
If I read the documents and NOTAMs correctly, there's no "grandfathering."
That may be your case here.

Yeah, John, that's got to be it, then. That's consistent with my findings given that (a) I'm able to fly a few of the ones already listed as part of the 737 program and (b) the JS41 seems to have been added later given it's entirely missing from the Promotions manual.

So, I also recently completed my FO test for the 757. How do I now go about getting a Checkride now that I'm "Eligible to request" one? Same deal? "Request Additional Rating"??
Sorry for all the silly questions.
Thanks,
Jim

In the PILOT TESTING AND PROMOTION section of the Pilot Center, click on REQUEST ADDITIONAL RATINGS.
Then choose the 57 from the drop down menu. As soon as the Chief or an Assistant Chief Pilot is able to, a checkride will be assigned to you.
BTW, no question is silly. It was confusing for me as well, when I first joined. The best advice I can give you is to spend some time exploring the site. Especially the Pilot Center. The guys that have put this site together for us, have held no bars in putting together some pretty cool tools and information for us to use.
If you get lost while you're exploring, there's always the "Home" button to take you back to the beginning.

NOTAM 34 Explains additional ratings procedures. http://www.deltava.org/notams.do
To further elaborate, check rides only are required on the program aircraft only when a) you are requesting additional ratings in or transferring to a program for the first time, b) you attained your rating prior to check rides being implemented, and wish to seek an additional rating.
As for the 757 check ride - it's assigned
