While I understand and respect the reasoning behind this idea, I could not disagree more. On 9/11/01, all flights were canceled and airborne aircraft ordered to land for security reasons, and the FEAR that there were more terrorists in the skies aboard airliners. To basically re-enact that, would be more like paying homage to the terrorists, than those who were killed that day.
In MY opinion, the BEST thing to do would be to carry on with our normal way of life, telling terrorists that they can not control us, and force us to live in fear. We should ALSO pause to reflect on the events of 9/11, remembering those who died and gave their lives while trying to save the lives of others. But a day long stand-down is NOT the way to do that.

I wont be flying tomorrow. Remember, this is just a "game". Standing down isn't going to show the world that we fear... There are far more important things to do tomorrow. I'll be spending time with my friends and family tomorrow, the sim can wait until next weekend.

We are standing down to pause from our hobby to spend time with our families and friends and to remember those who lost their lives. This is NOT a re-enactment of the grounding orderd by the FAA. DVA for all its worth is "play time." Spend real time with those who matter most. I'm sure that those who lost loved ones would give anything to spend one more day with them. I know I can speak for the MD11 program when I say that no flight reports will be approved for flights on 9/11. The staff has made the decision to thoughfully pause for that day. DVA operations will cease on 9/11.. likely from 12am to 12 midnight EST.

I'll correct a couple of things I mentioned earlier. This is a request by staff, not a demand. The email that was sent to the MD11 pilots states that no PIREPS etc will be approved that day, not that they wouldn't be approved FOR that day. And the time is 12am to 12 midnight. No mention of EST. I thought that was indicated but it wasn't...so local time is fine.
Hayden, read my ealier response. It's not a re-enactment of the grounding of all flights. It's a simple request by staff to pause and reflect, honor the victims and spend time with your family. Do as you wish.

I am a firefighter by trade. I honor(ed) the 9/11 victims with 5 voluntary tours in Iraq and continue to honor the meaning of the event with volunteering with public service in my community. I honor and respect my 343 brothers lost on that day as well as all the other victims by carrying on. I will not let 9/11 be turned into some sort of weepy holiday or labor day cookout opportunity rather, I will celebrate the resolve, strength of my generation by going to work, and asking myself every day "what can I do to be part of the solution and not part of the problem?". I honor an remember 9/11 and it's victims everyday I wake up by loving my wife and children because the lesson of 9/11 is that evil exists, it lurks waiting, and it can take everything you have in a day so you need to make every single day count. If you want to celebrate 9/11 in a meaningful way, go to a shelter and serve meals, go to the red cross and donate blood, go to a VA hospital and volunteer for a day to help my fellow warriors who have been permanently wounded by the results of 9/11-don't say "I am going to honor 9/11 by not playing a video game for the whole day!" While I understand that your hearts are in the right place by wanting to do something, agreeing not to play a game for a day ends up being self serving and cheapens the sacrifice many Americans (and Brits and Aussies and our other Allies for that matter) made on that day and CONTINUE to make everyday.
Whether I fly tomorrow or not will be because It's 9/11, it will be because I actually have time to do it as the weekends are the only chance I have to fly.

As the staff has stated, and re-stated... this is a request... not a strict order. Some of us will spend the day with friends and family. I personally, will actually step foot in a church, with my girlfriend and her family for the first time in ten years to pray. Others will fly. The ultimate choice is yours.

Allow me to reiterate - this is a personal choice for everyone and has exactly ZERO to do with "respecting" America. Each of us is free and encouraged to do what you feel is appropriate to remember the events of a decade ago. This date brings forward a lot of emotions (as you can tell) and it's up to each of us to express those in the most appropriate way.
Cheers!

Mathias... I checked in on occasion, and while the "in-flight map" showed a lot of traffic from OTHER VA's, DVA had VERY little presence in the sky! Well done!

I would love to see a Sticky Thread about this.
While I respect anyone who wishes to show their respect and remember the events of 9/11/01 by "standing down" this day I have to say I take issue with the wording of this post. I, like the vast majority of pilots at DVA, wish to respect America and the insinuation that we are not respecting America if we do not feel that the way to do so is by "standing down" and "complying" (as you put it) is insulting. Everybody mourns and remembers in their own way. While I disagree that the way to do it is to stop doing something we enjoy I realize I have the freedom to make that choice. I do not appreciate being told that "if I wish to respect America" I will comply with YOUR way of showing respect. This post, and the decision of DVA, is tantamount to me creating a post saying "if you want to respect America you WILL fly into NY today." It's outrageous.

I think some are overeacting here just a little. Everyone chooses to observe this day in their own way. I am sure Ryan did not mean to offend anyone. I had my flag up this morning and spent time with my wife and beautiful little girls. This afternoon I turned football on and flew into JFK. In no way do I feel I have disrespected the airline or this very important day to never forget.

I am sure he didn't intend to offend anyone. I am just pointing out that we should be careful of how we approach topics such as this. Especially if someone is going to post a topic in this manner. That's my only point. I just want someone at DVA to realize that these types of edicts cross a line. That's all. I never felt there was malice in Ryan's intentions. Much like Ryan is posted his opinion and wishes I am voicing mine as well.
There's an interested thread in the VATSIM forum regarding the 9/11 fly in as well. Discussion boards and designed for just this: discussion.

Sorry for the unthoughtful wording, was posting as I saw fit in the moment. I enjoyed my day with my sibling as it was a nice day after all. This evening I had a hour of freetime that I would normally use for flying, in lieu I browsed and installed freeware. Thank you for the comments as they have provoked some thought out of me. Let's get out there and fly tomorrrow.
