so what do you do when you have a -600 or -700 landing? Do you file it and feel the shame or toss it away for another day? I have two red landings in my record and I'm wondering if maybe I shouldn't have just "lost" the pirep...

If your spine was intact and you weren't 4 inches shorter after the landing, you're given credit for the flight.
I, however (even though I have logged one at about 745) will choose to scrap the really bad ones.
After a while, you'll see that everyone has them though, and a record of mostly 200 to 300 with a 500 or maybe more thrown in occasionally is not too bad.
BTW, Congrats on Captain.

To be fair these include some flights working out ACARS Bugs years ago and when auto land forgot how to flare....
that and when your flights are 6-8 hours in duration you really don't want to just throw out the bad ones...

I log all of them, the good the ones when I forgot to flair and the ones that I just plainly drove the landing gear into the runway. I chose to do that when I started so I could see over time my pattern of landing and they have greatly improved over the short time I have been with DVA.

I log most of them unless I really mess it up. A lot of things cause them other than poor technique such as untimely screen stutter just as you are about to touch or a crazy wind which is much harder to deal with on the sim vs. real world. It can be maddening to end a great flight with a hard touch down but it happens to all of us. I sometimes even say a bad word when I slam one.

I don't throw them out either. I can't remember the specific flights that had the bad landings, but I can give you an example of the worst one: I had a glitch that sent me from 100 ft above the runway to mains+nosewheel on the pavement instantly after a LONG flight in the MD-11. Just like Andrew Rogers said, you just don't want to throw these out because of a glitch, or whatever the cause is. That particular one made ACARS register my landing vertical speed as -1200fpm.
Also, this topic comes up from time to time in the forums, and one thing I always point to as a reference is the CRJ overweight landing guidance (RW). When we have to do an overweight landing for some emergency, we are asked to monitor the vertical speed at touchdown. If the vertical speed is less than -400fpm, we don't even have to do an inspection on the plane. So keep that in mind: above max landing weight (higher than normal loads being placed on the gear on touchdown regardless of vertical speed), -400fpm or less doesn't even merit an inspection. This is guidance from the engineers and FAA approved.
Of all the planes I've flown in FSX, the MD-88 has always been the one I've landed the smoothest. Things do get a little more interesting as the weights go up. Also consider how long you're floating in order to get that nice low vertical speed at touch down. You can get away with a lot in the sim, but good technique dictates you not float. RW requirements are to land in the first 3000 ft, or third of the available landing distance, whichever distance is shorter. The technique is to aim for the 1000ft markers, and the flare for a relatively smooth touchdown with minimal float by about the 1500 ft mark.
If you're having some hard landings, don't worry about it so much. Keep working on it. It happens to everyone (simmers and RW pilots). One thing you can try if you'd like to get some practice AND get the readouts from ACARS: Setup a flight in ACARS with the origin and destination the same and click on the "test flight" or "practice flight" check mark below the remarks section (I can't remember the same of the check mark. It's next the the checkride check mark.).

I personally refuse to file a pirep with a bad landing as I feel in my own mind that I dont deserve to be credited, it can be frustrating at the end of an 8 hour flight but to me when I'm piloting a 747, there is no way I will file a report with a bad landing

Just remember that there's more to it than the landing touchdown rate. Also, really low touchdown rates aren't necessarily an indication of a great landing. Those would be floaters, and while that's fine in a Cessna 172, a big heavy jet really needs to be planted onto the pavement and slowed down. Also, this is a simulator, and it's harder to gauge things than in real life. If you happen to get a bad one, don't worry about it. It happens to all of us sooner or later.

I submit 100% of my flights. I am a data analysis junkie! I like to look at trends and I also like to pull up the flight data from my rough landings. I will looking at my approach data leading up to the rough landings. It helps be try and correct my errors.

Hopefully there's hanger room at KCHS. A Delta 737-800 that came in tonight needs immediate inspection. Probably wouldn't hurt to check the runway too.

Technically, if you can walk away - it's not a bad landing As a new Delta pilot, I was surprised at how much info Acars shows.

I recently filed one with a -915 :-0 .......It was due in part to high winds (not pilot error :-)) But I am usually around -125 to -200 so I blamed it on the wind replaced the struts on the aircraft and continued flying ;-)
