I've got spyware/malware on my computer.
I hvae Norton Firewall and Antivirus, non of them is able to do anything, though they read the virus and delete it but my PC is not healed at all.
I also ran Ad-Aware to remove spyware, and indeed it found the spyware files and deleted them, but the undesired windows and pop-ups and automatic desktop icons still appear.
What in the hell can I do??, I've tried everything. I think that my only way out is with a complete re-formatting. Just wanna make sure is there anything else I can do? The problem is that since this is a generic computer (or built or however u call it), I do not have Windows installer, nor Norton antivirus nor anything!

I just reformat. I have found nothing that really cleans it. Most only supress it, but it comes back..
I have a external HS to keep backups on so reformatting is not a big deal in my life. But to some its a big headache.
Cheers,
Andrew

ok ... anyone else comes up with an idea to avoid reformatting the HD? the problem is the window's disc, and the Norton disc too.
If not, how the hell do I block the Internet Explorer windows from opening with crap on them? It's just too annoying having that while working, either me or someone else at my house.
will unninstalling Internet explorer stop that?

Eugenio, what is the name of the program that is bothering you? You might want to do a google search for it and it might show some ways te get rid of it.

You might try spybot search & destroy, this program also removes spyware and malware, also looks into your registry for thses things. As to internet explorer, if you have a web browser that blocks spyware, I would use it instead, firefox is a good web browser. In my opinion getting rid of Internet explorer may help getting rid of the popups. In any case I wouldn't use internet explorer because it is to vulnerable to spyware. Hope this helps.
Good luck

Joe, I didnt get the email .. please try sending it directly to davkeno@gmail.com
I'm trying out that Spy Sweeper ....... Spybot Search and Destroy did the same thing: "Congratulations, your system is clear of spyware" but the spyware and pop-ups are still there.
I'll upload a picture with some screenshots of what is happening here.

Eugenio:
Do a couple of things prior to reformatting. I believe that you are running WinXP. If so, start the computer in safe mode (do this by pressing F8 before the windows screen appears.) Then while in safe mode run the antispyware and antivirus utilities. I prefer to use spybot search and destroy and AdAwareSE. Starting the computer in safe mode may help as the malicious software will not be running (make sure to use just the basic safe mode option, not the network support option), as most will not unload software, and cannot clean it while it is running. Also run msconfig, and services.msc from the run prompt and make sure that any software that is loading at startup, or any services that are started are those that you installed. You can go to blackviper.com for a descriptive list of what the services do or search on google for the program name. Hope this helps. If you need any more help mail me or leave me a message here.
Bill

That is a very useful tip too Bill. I'll try that out as well in case that the spyware is still there after Joe's method. Hopefully I won't have to use your method, Bill =) Thanks veeerry much

Eugenio!!!
Try X-Block from xblock.com. It's payware but it nukes everything!!!. I run it every 48 hours on my pc and I've no probs. with malware. Another thing; I don't run IE. Everything targets IE; use something diff. and they can't find it.
I'm a MOzilla freak myself and find it quite useful. Mozilla is freeware; buy a coffee cup from them!!!
Barrie
Note: I use X-treme firewall pro and x-cleaner and I've NEVER had malware, virus', spyware, etc. on my machine since installing them.

ditch windoze. but if you can't do that I recommend you get Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Second, get Firefox for your internet browser!! http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=100989&t=57

Ok I'm trying several things here, one by one.
So far I have used: (all of these, both in Normal and Safe Mode)
- Ad-aware
- Spybot S & D
- Xoftspy
- Norton Antivirus
Non of these find anything.
Also, the spyware seems to load also in Basic Safe Mode, and though it cannot connect to the internet in safe mode, IE and Firefox windows still pop-up.
I've got Mozilla Firefox too, and you guess: the spyware opens Firefox and IE windows now
I appreciate all the help I've been getting here, but KEEP THINKING PEOPLE please =)

You might need to reinstall windoze. Try doing it without reformatting your hard drive. Hopefully you have windoze on a different partition than everything else...

I had many of the same issues, norton, spy bot, adaware, etc would not stop it. Try Panda software at:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/home/default.asp It found stuff that all the others missed. Also
you might want to read this item from microsoft, it seems that your system keeps taking you back to the same
place "How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP" web site is:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5BLN%5D;310405
