So I keep getting this error that fsx has run out of memory and needs to restart, yet my computer still has plenty of unused space available. It has been happening pretty frequently and is beginning to be annoying. If anyone could help me with this problem it would be great!
Thanks,
Greg

Happens to me on occasion too. I have Windows 7 64 bit, 16GB RAM and FSX. It happened tonight sitting at Newark after my 2nd online leg on VATSIM. FSX was only using about 3.5GB RAM and total system memory usage was less than 50% meaning I had at least 8GB RAM more that FSX could have used. Maybe it has something to do with a high volume of visible traffic on VATSIM.

FSX is a 32 bit app and as such can only use about 4GB .... I seem to recall there was a way around this, however.

FSX won't use more than 4GB, but if you have more memory other apps will use the extra so that the whole 4GB can be used by FSX. If you have a 64 bit OS you don't have to anything but if you have a 32 bit OS you need a switch in the fsx.cfg file to utilize the full 4GB I think.

Hello everyone, this is my very first post here. I came to forums for other reasons(i have a problem with acars installation)but i saw this thread and i think i can help, becouse i like FSX troubleshoothing. This is my way to avoid OOM errors:
- apply this microsoft patch: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947246
- open FSX.CFG and set your Texture max load to 2048. You can live it on 1024, but anyway don't go over 2048.
If you want 4096 for NGX VC for example, set all other textures to max 2048(REX clouds, payware airports, all!) and than set in fsx.cfg 4096. This is important factor in OOM errors. Also, use DXT optimized REX clouds where you can - from REX settings display, and maximum 2048 resolution. I use 1024 for clouds, with GTX560ti. Also disable all scenery which is not used for current flight, all addon and especially payware scenery. For example, if you fly in Europe, you don't need Africa, Australia etc. And there is no need for more then 2-3 airports enabled for current flight. Get used to enable just scenery which will be used, every time before you start FSX. Here is the great tool for that: http://sourceforge.net/projects/fs-sceditor/files/v1.1.1/
I didn't saw any OOM's for more then a year, using this tips.
BTW, there is no need to enable anything for FSX to use 4GB, FSX SP2 or FSX Acceleration are "large address aware" by default

This. If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows and FSX SP2 or Acceleration (and you should ) you are all set. But once you get over 3.2 GB of memory usage, you're at risk of a crash no matter what.
Cheers!

Of course, Windows 7 / 64 bit is the first important step for good FSX performance
If you install that microsoft patch i posted above, you can use all 4GB for FSX. No problem at 3.2GB anymore(but you must have at least 6GB RAM, 8GB recomended), at my system usage is about 3.8GB most of time - i have fsx tuned per Kosta's guide, pretty high settings and tons off addons

Okay let me skew the conversation a bit... anyone know how to prevent OOM on FS9? I have Win 7, 64-bit with 8GB of RAM.

Not sure if you guys have tried it yet, but I've posted this several times in the cooler before.
http://ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php
Download the installer, run it, select the fsx.exe or fs9.exe and it should fix the problem. It worked for me along with a few more pilots who have had the same problem.

Justin - you are a scholar and a gentleman. Your link worked perfectly. Thank you on behalf of all the AFVA staff that no longer have to process an ACARS Flight Restore PIREP from me just because I was getting close to Shanghai.
Now that I have hijacked this thread for my own personal consumption (and I apologize) - we now return to the original thread which was FSX

I was having the same issue. I tried to increase my virtual memory, and that worked for a short time. So I did some reading, and discovered that increasing my virtual memory was contributing to the problem. So I decreased the virtual memory down to 640, and I haven't had the problem since.
