When Delta Virtual Airlines put together its Board of Directors a few months ago, our goal was to include an elected pilot representative on the Board as its seventh member for a period of one year. We believe that although all current Board members are pilots, the pilot community deserves a chance to select a member of the Board to act as its representative, by providing feedback and opinions on the proposed strategy and plans of our virtual airline. We held off on beginning the selection process until a few logistical pieces were put into place, foremost among them the Pilot polls. Although we've gained some useful information from them (most importantly FS2002 vs FS2000 ratios), the primary rational for these polls was to be the selection mechanism for that seventh board member. This now in place.
Before I outline the selection process, I think it's important to take a moment to describe the Board of Directors and its relationship to Delta Virtual Airlines management. DVA management is responsible for the day-to-day operations of our virtual airline. They handle the nitty-gritty of promotions, check rides, PIREP approval and questions. We also keep the web sites up and running. Dennis, Mark, Geoffrey and myself work together when staff vacancies come up to identify good candidates for the job. The Board has a different outlook. It focuses more on strategic issues, such as "what do we want our virtual airline to focus on?" and "where do we see ourselves in a year or two?". It also provides a good forum to bounce ideas off of. One of the most important criteria for selecting the initial members of the Board was their ability to provide candid, thoughtful advice.
While there is no requirement for the Board's approval for every management decision, there is an expectation of being informed of such decisions, and there is an expection on the part of management that the Board will speak up in case of concerns or questions. Membership on the Board therefore conveys no official power or authority (with the exception of being able to view all Water Cooler posts), but it does guarantee that any questions or opinions will be dealt with and addressed.
You, as the pilot community, are free to choose your member of the Board. Any active Delta Virtual Airlines pilot who has been on the roster for at least 45 days at the close of the election is welcome to nominate him or herself over the next seven days, until 1201 EDT on June 22nd, either by posting in the Water Cooler or e-mailing me. Once nominations have closed, I will announce the nominees and create a new Pilot Poll to allow you to select your board member. During the voting period of 14 days, you will be allowed to change your vote, but no votes or totals will be posted during the election period. Once the vote has closed, the totals will be released.
Neither myself nor any DVA board or management members will actively participate in this election, although we reserve the right to privately cast a ballot. The criteria you use to select your Board member is up to you, but I would like to make a few suggestions.
First, I encourage you to review candidates' participation in the Water Cooler. The level and quality of their participation should give you a good clue as to the talents each can bring to Delta Virtual Airlines' Board of Directors.
Second, you should feel free to ask questions of the candidates, to determine how they feel about things and how approachable they are. One of them will be your representative - and although all of us on the staff and the board are open to your questions and/or concerns, ultimately this individual is selected by you.
Finally, you're encouraged to consider nominating yourself. If you believe that you have the skills, the desire and the commitment to play an active role in this virtual airline over the next year, we need you. I'll warn you - being on the Board is probably going to be (more than anything) rather mundane, but I think you'll gain a good picture as to how a virtual airline operates, and you will hopefully find this work quite satisfying.
If you are interested in nominating yourself or another individual, please reply to this post, or contact me via e-mail at ceo@deltava.org.
Cheers!
Luke

Luke, and fellow pilots,
I would also like to nominate myself for one of the positions on the board of directors. I think that after a year of dedication to this airline, both through flying, and countless posting in the watr cooler, I am more than fit for the position. I have loged into the site 424 times, and flown 139 flights for a total of 322.0 hours. Like I said I have been very active in the water cooler, helping pilots when needed, and asking for some help myself. I have a deep understanding of aviation, and the airline industry, which would benefit the board tremendously, and most importantly I love this virtual airline, and I love flying. I remember before joinig this VA I loved to fly, but after joining the VA I felt like I was flying for something, and now I don't mind staying up till 3 am just to land a long transatlantic flight, because now I can go PRIEP it and I really feel like I acompished something, and I want to help others realize the wonderful joy of flying for THE BEST VA ON THE PLANET!!!

I contacted Gene via e-mail this evening, and this was his reply:
Thanks Luke, but with becoming vatusa7 and now moving from one state to another in a few weeks I just don't have the time. Appreciate the thought and keep up the good work at DVA, you've got a nice group of people there.
Cheers!

I would like to throw my hat in the ring. I've been involved with Flight Sim from day 1. After one year sabatical I returned this winter to active participation. Maybe I'm not as active as some in the Water Cooler, but I am an avid reader and advocate of the hobby. My experience with corporations, non-profits and consultant to start-ups would apply to developing stratigic direction for our airline.

Well, I might as well. Count me in on the nominations. I have been part of DVA for over 2 years and have worked my way up from a CRJ to a 737. Although I do not post as much as some others, I do read almost every post on this board. Every day a read through the topics, and almost read all of the posts. I have always wanted to be a larger part of DVA.
Thank you,
