The trick with the keyboard is to use autopilot for almost everything. Takeoff and landing will be the challenge. During Takeoff turn the aircraft to make sure you meet runway heading and then while on the runway enter the runway heading, the altitude of choice, and the desired speed on the autopilot. In the chance that something might screw up after decision speed make sure you put the Localizer frequency of the runway that your departing on the NAV 1 radio so you can safely arrive back. Now once your sure you are percisionly straight on the runway with the compass start rolling. When at takeoff speed tap the down button, dont hold it, or else you'll end off with a tail strike, when you have cleared the runway pull the gear up and flip the autopilot then use the heading controls to turn, EX: - left turn, + right turn, the altitude will guide u through the climb, and the autothrottle will keep your speed good. You may want to fly IFR so u can have the controllers on your side from point A to point B.
If you thought takeoff was a challenge, my friend you have not seen anything yet. Before I talk about approach and landing, I want to warn you that the keyboard is the most UNFORGIVEN FLIGHT INSTRUMENT EVER USED IN THE HISTORY OF FLIGHT SIMULATOR, one mistake and your flight is over. I beg of u to use IFR during keyboard flight or you might screw up all the aircraft flying in the airspace, you dont want to deal with an angry controller or a virtual airforce1 fleet on each side of your aircraft shooting it down. You also want to fly IFR if you want to be set for the ILS approach making it easier for you, just set your speed, glidescope, and localizer hold and you should be set for safe arrival, with happy passengers, and on time. I fly for Delta Virtual Connection, and if I dont get these people off my CRJ on time so they can catch their 777s and MD 11s they will kick my butt.
On final remarks, make sure your runway is at least 7000 feet or longer for keyboard takeoff, and the same with keyboard landing. Happy Flyings!!!
