I have some money to get a SSHD.. any suggestions or things I should consider about the hard drive? Also, Im assuming that its easy to set up another hard drive and I know that I will have to uninstall and reinstall everything.. but can program's like REX just be remapped or do they have to be reinstalled also?

Art, I got a samsung evo. It comes with mirroring software. Not issues in mapping everything over for me but I don't have REX. 128GB drive. Starts up like a champ!

Mirroring is when you can clone your existing HD software to a new HD and then boot from that new HD

Art-
I just (last week) upgraded to Andrews SSD the samsung, starts in 14 seconds from button to desktop...PLEASE make sure you get an SSD the same size or larger than the HD you have now. If you don't, you will not be able to clone it. The OS will not recognize the new disk as large enough an corrupt needed files in the transfer. I recommend you get the drive, then bring your computer to a shop and have them "clone your drive to the new SSD." they'll know exactly what to do and everything will be exactly where it was when it is done. With that said, if you get a larger or same size SSD, have someone clone it, there is no need to uninstall anything.

Interesting point Josh. I went from 80GB to a 128GB SSD.
There is also software called Macrium that does a good job cloning drives over. Its not foolproof.
I know you probably don't want to hear this but a new drive is always a great opportunity for a clean install.....

Also agreed. Better yet, get an external hard drive shell and put your old drive inside in case you need the files from it.

FSX was back in 05~ before windows had any security on folder options as windows 7 8 10 does today, to mitigate problems with access to folders, It is recommended to create a Folder from your drive root letter,
so C:/FSX or what ever drive folder you have will revent folder sharing options leading to problems ect,

If I install a SSD along with my standard HD (lets say a 500GB SSD that will be dedicated to FS) I can just do a clean install and it will have it's own directory other than C: drive right? But I guess the best thing to do since I have the discretionary funds is to get a 1 TB SSD and just improve my overall computer performance and just do a clean install if I want and put it in a separate folder like C:/FSX.

If you install a new HDD and load windows onto it, this will be your new main harddrive, being said if you plan to have windows and FSX on the same drive then Your Root folder to your drive will be C:/ and simply make a folder C:/FSX and install to that location.

Recommend that you keep the 1TB HD for backing up the SSD. You can mirror image the SSD to the HD. If the SSD goes belly up you have a bootable, albeit slower boot, system without having to reinstall. SSD's have a finite longevity. There are configuration settings that will improve drive longevity.
I use Casper to copy and partition drives. Casper can mirror to external drives too. Your SSD will come with mirror or cloning software. I believe it is Acronis that may be robust with similar capabilities as Casper.

Terry

You can't go wrong with Samsung EVO. Slowest part in most any computer today is the conventional spinning hard drive. Replacing that with an SSD dramatically improves performance.
I run my system on a 128 GB Samsung EVO. 80 Gigs for Windows 7 and 40 Gigs for Linux Mint (I run linux for all other tasks besides FSX). Works really well. Windows partition is dedicated to FSX.
Still, conventional drives are good for cheap mass storage. I prefer Western Digital but other brands are good too.

Here's a good read - http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead
While SSDs have a finite longevity, so do we. I write to my boot drive at a rate of around 2TB/year. Do the math and place your bets.
Cheers!

I'd be interested in knowing Facebook's experience about SSD longevity. They deliver 2 billion images daily using SSD. I would tend to think like the experiment Luke quoted that institutional applications stress hardware more than we do. I am impressed with Luke's 2TB per year, but then we already know Luke is an institution.
This is a helpful, easy-to-understand, guide for installing, transferring data and maximizing life expectancy that appears in Newegg. I generally look to Newegg for purchases and not technical input, but in this case they seem to have it all in one package. Much of the text was taken from Samsung. http://www.newegg.com/Product/CategoryIntelligenceArticle.aspx?articleId=291#topic6
