I was doing a review of the signature image handling code today, and I noticed that I never actually got around to enforcing restrictions on the image and file sizes of these images. This is a significant issue, for two reasons.
First, many of our users are still using dial-up connections. A significant signature image will take a while to download. Second, if they're using broadband, they probably have a faster connection than I do. You may not be aware that the DVA site is hosted out of my bonus room above the garage, and all we use is the cheapest business-class internet service I can get.
(In case you're interested, I'm attaching a picture of our 'server farm'. The box on the left side is my internal server, which is a dual P3 866. The middle box is the DVA server, with a 400Mhz DEC Alpha 21164 RISC CPU and 512MB RAM, and the box on the left is the mail server and NAT gateway, with a 300 Mhz PII with 128MB RAM. The blue box to the right of the monitor is the internal 10/100 switch, and right below it is the IDSL router and 10Mbps Ethernet hub for the external network. The big boxes to the right are the UPSs that provide clean power and surge supression.)
I will be restricting signature images to a limit of 32K in size. If you are careful with your image size and JPEG quality, I don't see that as an excessively onerous restriction. To enforce this, I will be adding code to profile edit function to automatically discard images above that size. Once this is in place I will skiip through the pilot profiles, and simply delete any images above 32K. It's a little dranconian, but efficient.
If you like your signature image and don't want to lose it, save it. Right click on it and select "Save as File". If you are curious as to its size, right-click on it and select "Properties". The file size should be there, and the magic number is 32768 bytes. If it's 32769, it's going into the bit-bucket in a few days.
Cheers!
Luke

*phew* I'm toeing the line but still golden! Good move, Luke. I certainly understand the importance of conserving resources. I like that photo by the way. Kinda looks a little like my lab. I'm testing for Microsoft MCSE certification so I've got computer boxes and parts all over the place.

I don't like the idea one bit. Maby we need restrictions yes but that much? Maby 50k or something. As many can see it's kinda of a compition or the way us pilots at DVA show off. It's the way everybody knows us maby if we could lessen the restriction or something?

Oh, that photo reminds me of my room at one time...I was putting together an Athlon box so there were components all over my desk, at the same time I was trying to fix a crappy old machine that I eventually gave up on..lol
