alright, well after many painfull days of poking my head inside my computer, then transfering everything over to a new case and installing a new Motherboard, Power Supply, and Processor I've finally reached the moment of truth. But when i try to turn on the computer, all i get is a faint "click click click" sound from the power supply and nothing else. I've re-installed the processor and fan thinking that was the problem, but the same clicking and nothing. I've verified all my power supply connections and am frankly running out of ideas. Anyone ever have this type of problem before? btw, my specs are-> AMD Athlon XP 2000+, GeForce4 Ti4200 64MB DDR AGP, 384 MB RAM....
(hopefully) see ya up there (when i can get my comp together),

I hate to say it, but you may need to undo what you've done to some extent. If you're getting powerup problems, remove all add-in cards except your video card. Disconnect the power cables for the hard/floppy drives, and try to start the computer again.
First, is the CPU fan starting up? Most/all Athlons won't start if the CPU fan is inoperative, to guard against overheating. Is the power supply firing up? Are you getting a post? What motherboard do you have?
Cheers!

Brand new motherboard is Shuttle AK32A Socket A ATX with Audio, USB, and AGP 4X Support
CPU fan does not start (it too is brand new and freshly installed)...
After removing a few things and unplugging power from drives, still the same (really faint) "click click click" from the power supply. Thanks for the quick response..

OK, if the CPU fan isn't starting you need this dealt with first off.
First, is the fan mounted the proper way on the heatsink (don't laugh - I reverse mounted the one on the Alpha). Second, is it plugged into a fan header on the motherboard for power? Are the motherboard power leads connected? Is there an aux 12V connector (4 prong) to plug in?
Cheers!

It's possible you may have a bad power supply. Most new motherboards will actually power on even without a processor installed, unless the power supply is bad. If after replacing the power supply your still dead in the water, your next possible cause is a bad motherboard.

ok...
Luke-I'm fairly certain that i've mounted the fan the correct way..i had a computer friend supervising when i did that part. It's really quite difficult to take on and off, so i'll leave it as a last resort (btw the fan is a Volcano 6Cu+). I've plugged everything in from the fan (essentially the power cord) and still nothing.
Dennis-that could be...the power supply is new as well (came with the case). I have another one from my old computer that i'll try out, just to check.
thanks!!!! appreciate your help...

If you think the fan is good, it probably is. An idea might be to swap out power supplies. I'm with Dennis on that one. One other thought - there may be a short somewhere. Is there any contact between the case and the mobo?
Cheers!

The most common problem I have when putting together a new machine is getting the system panel connectors plugged in right: they are those small connectors on the edge of the motherboard that say "speaker" "IDE led", "reset", "ATX Power switch", etc., Sometimes it's very easy to get these plugged in just exactly backwards the way it is labeled on some motherboards.....stop and give these connections a real hard look and check the book on it. I just got done building my newest beast, and it wouldn't start up first time because of this (again)....I looked at the MB and it looked right, but what I had done is I ended up plugging the ATX power Switch plug (which turns on the whole machine) into the speaker connecter. Try that one. BTW, if you need a great power supply I just got the Antec True Power 550Watt, I am VERY happy with what it has done to my computer, and monitor, my whole machine couldn't be running smoother.

well, i checked and made sure there weren't any contact points, but still the same thing happened. Swapped out power supply, same thing. I'm going to *try* and re-install the fan (if i can ever get it out that is) because i bet that's where the problem is. Thanks for your help/suggestions
see ya up there,
