After having my computer get a new operating system, and some new fans installed; you're not going to believe this. The clicking monitor problem has RESURFACED!!!! ARGH!!!!!
The idiot at the computer repair shop wouldn't say what kind of card it took. I'm just frustrated. I should have gone with my friend last week, but did I? There wasn't enough room in the car.
So what could possibly be the trouble here?

I'm stuck with my 64 MB ATI 8500 card, and can't replace it, because I don't know what kind of slots it has. I am very unhappy right now with what happened. These past eight days have been a WASTE of time and money. Now I'm back to square one. If I take it to the same guy again, he's liable to screw up my stuff again.
Any suggestions on a reputable computer repair service with multiple employees in the Birmingham area?

Brittany,
I used to build computers for Clark County, even went to school for it! If you feel comfortable removing the outer case and can email a pic. I can tell you what kind of slot you've got. Needs to be done with lots of light and closeup (sp). Don't know what mfg. of cpu you've got but taking the case off should be no more complicated than removing a couple of screws on the back (where everything plugs in) and lifting/pulling the case off. On 2nd thought do you know how to get to the BIOS setup screen??? That will tell you without taking anything apart. On -MOST- cpu's if you start hitting the DEL key IMMEDIATELY after turning it on it will enter that menu. If you get that far -DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING- but start looking for lines with the word PCI in them. I can't offhand think of a downloadable software tool to help you out but I'll dig around.

Brittany,
Had a brain bubble after my first post<g>. Went to ATI and your card currently is AGP Bus 2x/4x.
Don't have to take anything apart <GGGG>.

You're sure now?
I found an earlier post about this. Someone suggested starting FS in safe mode. I tried that last night, and it didn't do the clicking. I think I'll try this until I get my video card replaced.
Every time my friends asked the repairman about replacing the video card, the repair guy kept saying that we didn't need to replace it. Even when I went down with them to pick it up on Friday, the repair guy said, "You don't need to replace video card."

Brittany,
Just read up on safe mode and since it's only loading minimal drivers perhaps you could try to reinstall the drivers for your video card.

I think the guy at the computer shop might have reinstalled the drivers, but I'm not sure. I'll have to check.

You do want to make sure the drivers are up to date.. if not that can cause real issues..

And brittany, I would recommend replacing the video card. 64 MB is fine, but if you get one that is 256 mb or higher you can dramatically increase your frame rates and performance.. Good prices on www.newegg.com.. if you want any suggestions feel free to email me.

It's great Brittany. Go to Pricewatch.com and search for their video cards there. That is the cheapest place to find computer parts, yet they are quality. As far as getting a 256 or higher, I wouldn't suggest it. Not many models can push even 256 to it's potentcial, and if it can, you are looking at a 400 dollar video card. Above 256 you are looking at an 800 dollar video card. 128 will do fine. Unless you're filthy rich (which I'm not) and a graphics rather than framerate simmer (which I am) I would just go for the 128. On pricewatch, you can get amazing deals. You can spend about 200 and beat just about anyone out there who sims or you can spend 75 to 100 and still be on top of the game. But, the key is pricewatch.com. Email me if you have any further questions.

For a budget card, the 9200 is a decent card. Following up on Chris's point, there are only a handful of games that can use 256mb of VRAM and FS is not one of them. Highest I have seen the VRAM take up during FS was 210mb under a very high stress operation. A majority of the textures/etc are put into main system memory, assuming you have enough. If not, it goes into paging on the hard drive.

The reason why you are not getting the clicking when running in safe mode is that by default safe mode uses the command line switch -swrend. This means that the graphics rendering is done by the software and not by your graphics processor. The way to check would be to open the properties for the safemode shortcut and see if it shows the -swrend switch.

And how would I go about disabling it, so I wouldn't have to start it in safe mode?

If you open the properties for the safe mode executable, you could delete the -swrend switch. If you do that though, your clicking will more than likely come back, as it will then be trying to render in hardware mode. It appears that what is stopping the switching is running in safe mode which uses software rendering. Try going to www.guru3d.com, and download the newest set of omega ATI drivers. I would also suggest re-installing DirectX 9.0c prior to installing the video drivers. One other idea to check would be to see what refresh rate your monitor is running. Make sure the refresh rate for the monitor and video card are the same. Both settings can be found in the display properties. One or both may solve the problem if your tech says that the video card does not need to be replaced. Did your tech say what was causing the problem?
