OK, the Abit IS7-E sure is a sweet motherboard. I've got it combined with 1GB of GEIL PC3500 RAM in a matched pair for dual channel operation. The IS7-E comes with its own special overclocking menu in the BIOS, and if you push it too far, it automatically resets to more forgiving settings. I've pushed it too far twice tonight but have never had to reset the CMOS. Nice, especially for an overclocking virgin like myself.
The RAM claims to run at CL2 until 217Mhz, but that's crap. Anything above 210Mhz and CL2 causes nasty stuff to happen. However, running at CL2.5 I can push the FSB from 200 to 225Mhz, with rock-solid stability. That means the FSB is now running at 900Mhz, and the CPU is running at 2.93Ghz. With the stock heatsink and cooler, I'm still only around 38 degrees - at a third of a gigahertz overclocked.
AMD vs. Intel wars are the CPU equivalent of Airbus vs. Boeing, but I will say this: the IS7-E plus P4 2.6C cost me around $260. If you get a 400Mhz FSB Barton chip plus an nForce 2 motherboard, you are looking at similar prices, and this combination has been very forgiving and nice, and actually runs faster.
Now to fire up BF1942 and FS2004. Sliders to the max, baby.
Cheers!
Luke
