Ladies and Gentlemen, drumroll please. (just kidding)
I brought forth the idea of a "Live Event" to the staff a few days ago, and received some very good ideas and input, and more importantly, a pretty good response that a lot of people would be willing to attend, so now I'm releasing the idea to you guys for your input.
What do I mean by "live event"? I mean that all of us, as an organization, get together for some dinner sometime next year (more on dates to follow) in Atlanta, and get to know each other, put a face to the landing. I thought of Atlanta because it's reasonably well served by the airlines (discount and full-service alike, aka Delta and AirTran) and because it's reasonably central to most of us.
How many of you would be interested in this? For dates I was thinking perhaps the last or second to last week in June. Venue is still under discussion, Luke graciously offered to have us all as guests at his place for a barbecue, provided we have our own accomodations, naturally. If anyone has any ideas for another possible location (c'mon you Atlanta guys and gals) then by all means speak up! It needs to be a reasonably-priced restaurant somewhere in the Atlanta area, probably not too far from ATL, because I imagine some of us will be flying in. I'll be driving (that's right driving) from Houston, in all likelihood, so you lot can ride the JB airport shuttle.
So with that said, let me hear your ideas, whether or not you'd be willing to go, and any date ideas.
Thanks y'all!

I live in Los Angeles and if you can arrange a saturday, I can make it. A red eye to Atlanta, spent the day with fellow DVA pilots and get back either late Saturday or Sunday home.
Sounds interesting.
I am in.

Hmm...
Well, problem:
A. For those who fly in, im guessing we're all going to have to get rental cars?
B. Will there be alcoholic drinks over there? heheh i dont mind...;)
C. Should we bring computers?
D. If we dont have to get rental cars at ATL, will someone be there to pick us up? Like someone holding a sign " DVA Pilots " at a certain location in ATL?
E. Is there an age requirement?
F. Man a year is a LONG long time, why not do one like in November / December for a weekend? Think about it... The fares would be cheap, the airport might not be as congested as summer-travel...
See cause right now ( I live near FNT airport in michigan ), if i went, i'd probably fly FNT-ATL on AirTran or Delta Comair ( Both fly the route )... Both want like $190 roundtrip... But i bet like in November/December it'd probably be like $120/$130 or so, which of course... the cheaper the better.

A. To get a rental car you have to be 25. For those of us that aren't, I'd drive and could do SOME pickups.
B. Ask not questions for which you surely know the answer.
C. I doubt it, we're just getting together for dinner, not a LAN party..
D. See A
E. Not that I'm thinking of.
F. I'm planning this far in advance so we can get as many people nailed down to come as we possibly can.
Ralph, we're not sure of a date yet, but we'll let everyone know. Any specific times in June that would work for you?

hm, possible for me. Only 3.5 hours from CLT. I have a few contacts I could work, one owns three hotels in ATL, DS has some hotel contacts as well.
Just beating a dead horse here, but it would be a good time to introduce ourselves to Delta (real world) and see if we can get some tours. Just thinking here.

It's only a two hour drive for me so I might could make it. There's a restaurant in downtown Atlanta called "The Spaghetti Factory", if you live in a major city you may have heard of it, and they have EXCELLENT food if you like pasta. Just a suggestion though. Also, I like David's idea about the tour. I think that would be a lot of fun.

Can we approach Delta Airlines and ask if we can get some kind of discount for the flights to attend our DVA: Live and in Color meeting in ATL. At the end we all are carrying Delta's name proudly and maybe Delta Management will do something for us.
Just an idea

Kerem,
Senior Management can offer more on this, but I don't think if we suddenly approached DAL and said "hey here we are" they would immediately offer us lower fares. Baby steps.
Michael,
Yes, we are thinking either the second to last or last weekend in June.

JB,
Planning for next year should give time to discuss things with Delta. Hopefully they would appreciate us choosing to congregate at their hub for some spotting. Foolish optimism tells me they may even choose to finance/endorse the event.
My useless banter aside, the latter half of June sounds like a good choice. If the list of people attending grows to a good enough size, it may be more practical to rent/cater a banquet hall for the occasion. Another thing to consider is wives, fiances, and girlfriends and the numbers they bring.

Well I would sure love to meet as many DVA Pilots as possible. My wife and I use to run a resort and owning a chat site we got to meet many chatters over the years from as far away as France. A year away would work great for those of us who need time to plan and make certain finances are secure. I also think that Senior Staff starting talks with Delta over the possiblity of discounted flights is a worthwhile gesture. With the current financial crisis Delta is suffering some good PR would be worth its weight in gold for them. We here at DVA have tried to maintain a very well respected image of Delta and I'm certain that they are aware of it even more then we possibly know. Even 10-20 % off current ticket prices would save us alot of money and they could/should set advance bookings etc. As many active pilots as we have here and the sheer number of pilots that turn out for events from here shows that we fly the wavy gravy with pride.

Unfortunately, there isn't much of a way in plane spotting at ATL. No overlooks. You can get in the parking decks and try to get up on the upper level. Last time I tried that, they had them closed off.

How will this ordeal work? Is it going to be a one night deal? I think I can get down there... My uncle works for Delta's maintanence meaning buddy tickets, so I might be able to fly down and see them, then eat dinner w/ yall. I'm going down there the first week of August on stand by, I know I'll be getting into Delta's 737 maintanence hanger!

Sounds like a great plan, one year away will allow all of us to get concrete plans in order. I have to fly MBS DTW ATL, so I may get pinched in the pocket book. I am a brand-spankin', zero-timer, never flown for a VA newbie and this sounds like a great way to meet you guys. How about taking it one step further and doing regional meets at say, JFK, DET, ATL, DFW, DEN - you get the idea. That's one way to take the virtual community to the next step.

This is a great idea! I have been thinking along these lines for some time, but it's good to see I am not the only thinking about such an event. My thoughts are to make it an entire weekend (eg: Late Friday, All Day Saturday and 1/2 day Sunday) If anyone locally in ATL can organize either small events surrounding say a main event dinner on Saturday night, that would be great. In terms of approaching the real world Delta Airlines, that's a very good thought. Don't forget also that alot of the larger airports sometimes accomodate groups of 15 or more for airport tours. I'd love to see my HUB live.
Quote: "How about taking it one step further and doing regional meets at say, JFK, DET, ATL, DFW, DEN - you get the idea. That's one way to take the virtual community to the next step."
This is also a great idea that can be arranged by DVA management say by appointing a regional organizer. Count me in for both!!!!!!

Well if you all are so interested in seeing planes or so then, Next year i would definetly have my " licensce to fly" If you guys get serious ENOUGH then i'd rent out a C-172 and fly out to a local airfield close to our "GURU'S" aka Luke's home and maybe we can go sightseeing. I'm very serious about doing this, Only problem is that My WHEELS can't 60 on the highway it starts bouncing hehehe, take care....

My parents may be hard to convince, but we'll see about a year from now. They're just afraid about me meeting people I met over the Internet. But if they come...
I should be soloing by then. Too bad Hartsfield's landing fees are too high. oh well. I live only about 25 min. by car away.

Daniel,
I'll be 16 at the time so I don't know if it will help, but if your parents want to talk to the "brains" behind this whole idea I'd be more than willing to give you my cell phone number.

Heck yes. Comair is only like 2 hours from SBN flying time. Would the dinner be early? What if we can go but we just can't overnight? I know the last flight from ATL-SBN is like 8 or 9 something I'm not for sure, but if it's just a one day thing? I dunno I'm sure after alot of convincing my parents would let me but, they can be weird about this stuff. Let me know I'll do my best. Peace.

Was in Atlanta last April. Stayed at the Marriot on the airport property right off exit 73 I-85. We ate at a place called the 57th Fighter Group, restaurant right on the Dekalb-Peachtree Airport on Claremount Ave, about a 15 minute ride from the hotel. Very reasonable. Hotel right close to Delta Museum.

This sounds very interesting, although my parents won't agree, i have a year to suck up to them.
I would probably fly-in, its a 1.5 hr flight from LGA to ATL.
Also, it would be my first time in Atlanta so hopefully at the hartsfield you will have a sign up or something, i will definitly have a hard time looking for a car, especially if my flight comes in late.
I like Awais' idea of a tour of the area in his airplane, but how are u gonna fit a crowd of this size on a C172, imagine if all 400 pilots show up at Luke's for free food.
If I plan it right and book my airfare and car rental early, i might just show up.
PS: I'm 15, even though i am old enough to fly as a passenger by myself, my mom and I may not see eye to eye on this, especially with people on the internet, so its gonna be quite a challenge, but you never know.

Adam,
If we do accept Luke's extremely gracious offer of a BBQ, you would obviously have to provide your own accomodations. In any case, where you sleep is all on you.

wow, I dunno about that, going to a city I never been before, and then meeting people from the internet without hotel accomodations, thats a long shot. Maybe if it was like an annual "DVA confrence" with airfare and hotel included in the package it would be more appealing to my parents.
Anyway, good luck on getting this thing together. Adam.

This is a bit late but;
You could approach some hotels in the locality of where you guys will be hanging out. Ask for a group discount. Maybe Dave's history in the hotel industry could help you out. Be much cheaper, plus, the main event could be held in a hall/conferance room in the hotel if facilities are available.

Alright, I have stayed in many hotels and I thought I would give some advice.
1) When you check into the hotel, if they ask, tell them it is only you traveling. (They will usually charge more if multiple people are in your party.) (Only do this if you do not have a younger son, daughter, brother, or sister with you - see 5)
2) Ask about AAA discounts if you are a AAA or CAA member.
3) If you stay at budget hotels such as Motel 6, do not be drawn in by their $30 room as advertised on their sign. It is always taken and they try to sell you a $70 room instead.
4) You may also check and see if the hotel has government rates. I am yet to ever see them ask for any government ID and their government rates are $55 or lower for any room if they have them. This really helps if staying at a fancy hotel.
5) If you have a younger son, daughter, brother, or sister coming, let them go in when you check in for the room and have them giving the lady at the front desk the 'sad puppydog' look and appearing as if they are about to cry. (I once got a $220 room at a Hilton for only $50 doing this ;))
6) Always inspect the room before choosing it, especially at budget hotels. (I have seen pet hair all over the beds, toe nales on the night stand, solid waste all over the room, and even bullet holes in the door.)
(6-A) During the inspection, check to make sure the Air Conditioner is not too loud and you can sleep with it on or the heater during the winter.
(6-B) It is recomended to check and see if the window is one of those that will open or not so you may get a breath of fresh air during the night.
(6-C) Check the locks and do not buy a room that has a door on the side going to a neighboring room if you do not need to unless you are also getting the neighboring room.
(6-D) Make sure the mades didn't leave any surprises in the shower/bath. (You'd be surprised.)
(6-E) Insure that the room has a clock or wake up calls available or you may sleep in too late.
(6-F) If you plan on watching TV, (1) make sure the room has a TV, (2) see if the TV is color or black and white, (3) check the channels and make sure each channel is just not an exact repeat of each other, (4) find the remote [may be naled or stuck to the nightstand].
(6-G) After choosing the room, carefully remove the covers from the bed to make sure nothing is hiding under the covers or anything was planted there. (Again, some nasty things have been discovered under the covers.)
(7) Before staying at any motel, you may wish to check the ammenties there, such as a pool, exercise room, ice machine, internet access if you braught your laptop or computer, or even an airport shuttle.
(8) For a cheap breakfast, be sure to raid the continental breakfast provided by the hotel if you can. (I once made it out of there with 2 weeks of cerial, tons of doughnuts and muffins, and some bagels.) You can always share your newly aquired wealth with other Delta pilots if you do not know what to do with it.
(8-A) Check and see if the motel has a continental breakfast when you checkin.
(8-B) If they have a continental breakfast, check for an escape route, some way you can get outa there without being seen by the front desk.
(8-C) Do not eat your prized possesions down in the lobby. The lady at the front desk may tell you to put them back or that she thinks you have had enough, as if she is worried about the other guests.
(9) Be sure to take whatever is in the room as far as soap, coffie, pens... You may be able to trade these items for food items. (see 8)
I hope these help you with your travel plans.

Interesting idea, since I live in the NE suburbs of ATL it won't be to hard for me to get there, I would just have to know when and where exactly. BTW, the 57th Fighter Group serves the best Downwind Burger ever that is a burger at is one pound of meat on a bun, took me a hour to eat it hehehe

I'm about a 3 hour drive from KATL but I'm game. It's always great to put a face with a name. I'm not sure how practical it will be for some due to distances involved...but I think starting the planning almost a year in advance is a good idea.
I would have to somewhat agree on the idea of contacting a particular hotel with the idea of a "group" event to see about discounted rates. Might be something to look into. Oh well...bout time to leave JFK for Lost Vegas... ehehe...

Ok... just seeing this post for the first time made me go nutz... I just read the whole thread and I'm really wanting to go to it. But this would mean a lot of things. I would like to fly Delta, therefore I would have to get myself to Santiago de Chile or Sao Paulo just to get to ATL, since Delta does not fly to EZE (Buenos Aires) anymore. I could get to Miami and get a parents legal permit to rent a car and drive all the way up to ATL or OKL or where ever the meeting is held. (I love driving). I mean, whatever is cheaper... just lemme know... since I haven't got too much money, I want to go, but on a low budget. Anyway, any suggestions for an Argentine that wants to join fellow pilots?
Cheers!

Hey Gaston,
I heard that Delta Airlines plans to fly KATL-SAEZ-KATL again on 1 DEC or the first months of 05.... or you can fly on Southern Winds 767-300, they fly to KATL too.
I wanna go too, but it's out of my budget for now...

Thanks for the info Charly! But... it's gonna cost me going with Delta... so I think I'll take "el Lechero" (the Milk Man) because stops anywhere possible, to make it cheper. Once I flew in KMIA doing the following flight:
VASP:
Buenos Aires - Curitiba - Sao Paulo - VASP Boeing 737-200
Sao Paulo - Bahia - Fortaleza - Miami - VASP MD-11 <- Even though the long flight, I didn't want to get off this plane.
It all cost me 480 dollars. Worth it? I think it was... gonna try to look for low cost fares..
Cheers

Good idea JB. As you know Luke and I have already discused meeting and that would be a good setting for it. I only live about 150 miles from ATL so it is close enough for a drive down there. The only thing, is if it's going to be mid to late June let's try to shoot for mid June because I have annual trainning at Annette Island Alsaka from June 25-July 9. I wont be around the last week of June.

A wonderful idea, but just moved to Dayton, OH and need every cent I can get for flights to Atlanta for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and my wedding in Birmingham on New Year's Eve. Another suggestion I have is to have regional parties eventually. Have someone head up a region and let those who live closest to it go there. Just an idea. May can come in fhe future though!

It would be nice to get something like this together. I would like to be there myself, but, as Ken said, we definitely need some solid dates and plenty of planning time. I hope someone gets this project off the ground (no pun intended) because I think it would really be great for the VA as a whole.

I take it Luke you will be partaking in the Festivities in DC this year?? DC is a 3 hr drive from here, I see that the convention price took a hop in $$$ at 90 p/p, though the hotel accomadation at the Hilton are reasonable @ 85/night.
Not such a bad idea if the original meet has failed.

You where asking ideas about what restaurant to host the main get together and the idea of the 57th Fighter Group came to mind. It's a fairly large facility right on the PTK airport and so it's just inside the I285 perimeter making it decently located for folks either flying into Hartsfield or driving. If you want to take a look at the web site, check out

Guys Whats Goin on,
OKay dont know if this will work.
1. Is there an age limit to attend?
2. My dad owns a hotel outside of Altanta. Bout 45 from KATL. It is on the way to get to ATL if you are driving. I could probably make some arrangements on it ff I do it far enough in advance. It is a four star hotel and there is a Holiday Inn Express across the street. There is also plenty of confrence space, ballrooms, etc. I forgot there are eigth restaurants. Idk just an idea.
3.If so here is the link, and my email is to the side. http://www.chateauelanatlanta.com/
Thanks,
Peter Evers
