For DVA trans-Atlantic pilots (and anyone else who is interested):
I have obtained some real world SELCAL codes for Delta 777's and 767-3's (and most of the other fleet aircraft). If you're looking for realism, these are perfect with the FSSECAL program from http://www.satavirtual.org/fsselcal/
If anyone's interested, let me know and I will email or post what I have.

Yeah I have FS Selcal, I always use it if the plane I´m flying in real life has it.
For the codes I enter Airliners.net and browse thru the cockpit shots till I can see the Reg and Selcal code.
Could you mail me your codes please?? yapeyu@netgate.com.uy
Thanks!

Greg,
The short version: SELCAL is used mainly by long-haul airliners (North Atlantic, NO-PAC, etc.) to identify when a particular aircraft is being called by ATC. SELCAL uses two sets of two tones trasnmitted simultaneously to trigger an alert in the cockpit that ATC wants to talk to that aircraft.
Here's the more detailed low-down from ARINC's web site:
SELCAL (Selective Calling) is a technique that allows a ground radio operator to alert an air crew that the operator wishes to communicate with that aircraft.
Because of the background noise level experienced on HF radio frequencies, air crews usually prefer to turn down the audio level of their HF receiver until alerted via SELCAL of a message specifically intended for their aircraft. When the ground station operator wishes to communicate with an aircraft, he enters into the SELCAL encoder the 4-letter code of that aircraft, which is usually included in its flight plan, and transmits that code over the assigned radio channel. All aircraft monitoring that channel receive the SELCAL broadcast, but only those (preferably only one) that have been programmed with that 4-letter code will respond by sounding a chime or otherwise alerting the crew. The crew will then set their volume control higher to listen to the voice traffic and, using ICAO recommended radio procedures, assure that the message is intended for them.

How often are these used on Vatsim or is there something about the software noted that I'm missing?

I'm not sure how often VATSIM controlers use SELCAL (if ever), but there's a program that is compatible and intended for use with VATSIM. It's called FSSELCAL (http://www.satavirtual.org/fsselcal/).
Personally, I haven't had any luck with it, but being a slave to realism, I thought I'd get the codes together together for when (if) I get it to work.

SELCAL is a blessing in the real world. HF is very irritating to listen to. With SELCAL you only have have to moniter Guard 121.50 and Fingers (Air to Air) 123.45 over the oceans. If Radio (control) wants you they will SELCAL you and you will receive an alert (chime and flash). Pretty cool! In the old days (prior to SELCAL) crews hd to listen to the static of HF all the way across the pond!

Ok, here is a website that might be useful for the ones looking for SELCAL codes:
http://www.jetphotos.net/census/
Search by Operator (as Delta) and you'll find all Delta's fleet with it's delivery date, engine type, registration and SELCAL if available.
Enjoy
