Please anyone who has had this problem before or knows what the hell is going on...
My Documents was half-erased 5 minutes ago. I didn't touch anything, and suddendly half the files dissappear from there. I had pictures, schoolworks, INDINSPENSIBLE exams, EVERYTHING!
In one single folder, some files where erased, some files were not, but i think that if I was responsible for erasing My Documents, every single file would have been deleted, since there's only one folder!
I checked the recycle bin, the Norton protected files, did a full search on my HD for those files, and they're just gone!
Please if I could get some soon responses, it'd be very appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

Ran an integrity check on the filesystem. Also check for bad clusters in the harddrive. That could be the problem
Cheers!

Gastón:
I ran what you said, and everything is fine.
Besides, I ran the "Restore system" application, and it began to restore a ton of files, but when I checked if it restored my homeworks (some of them were supposed to be sent to Switzerland or something) it didn't, nor my 50 Mb. pictures.
I don't know what to do....
Best regards

By saying "everything is fine" I meant that the HD is fine, but my files are not back.
If anyone comes up with a new idea, that'd be great!

By Chance did you put those files in the Shared My Document folder? Also, are you running remote access, any File Sharinf programs?? I ask, because if that may be the case you could of beemn robbed per say.
Another possibility, did you do any kind of system Modification?? Computer Name, Domain, or a file restoration, from a previous day?

Anthony:
- Currently I'm not using any remote access program, call it P2P or any other stuff like that.
- Regarding the shared folder, non of the files were in that folder.
- I did actually a system modification, I entered "msconfig" and just disabled some processed on startup ... I think I disabled "Realsched" (I recently uninstalled Real Player), "Ares" (I uninstalled Ares months ago), "SWTrayV4"... and that's it I think.
Those are all the modifications that I've done to the system recently, nor I have added hardware or dangerous software.
Thanks for those suggestions.

Does Real use a central folder to store its music files? If so make sure it wasn't your My Documents folder or when you un-installed the program, it may have deleted the other files.
I'd download Microsoft Spyware and run that and do a virus check just to be sure. I'd also go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do a scan there as well. This is assuming you have a broadband internet connection.

I don't think Real had anything to do with it... according to his statement, all he did was use MSConfig to stop it from starting up, not deleting it..
All I can say, is BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP, then BACK UP the BACK UP.... I'm so freakin scared that I take a copy of my master B/U DVD, which contains a copy of all my pictures, music, and documents to the saftey Deposit Box I have once a month!!!
Sorry to hear about your documents... Hope you find them somewhere...

Chris, thanks for those suggestions, I've tried them both and found no spyware, nor viruses, nor troyan horses... I used Norton to scan them and Ad-Aware Antispyware... my PC is just clean.
I recently did a defrag today, took a little over 2 hrs, but that didn't fix anything...
Glen:
by saying 'indispesible exams' I meant like tests... I'm coursing the IBO (don't know if anyone has heard of that, I know Gastón has :P) and all of our homeworks and notes have to be typed, no more handwritten stuff.... and those 'tests' are investigations, regarding Environmental Systems, History, Literature, etc etc etc... those documents are (or were :S) suppposed to be sent to Switzerland to be graded by the organization... what I hate the most is that some of those investigations took me over 6 months to do them (of course that they're printed and stuff, but they're pages and pages long)
My mom is a teacher, and she lost some of her classes' exams too, withouth mentioning that she lost also the PPT presentations that she uses to give her classes...
Anyway I don't think that I can recover them.... but thanks for you help... I'll keep trying.
Best regards

Glen,
If you burn into CDs, let me tell you. CDs tend to lose data with time. So, the backup would be.. useless.
Eugenio,
Do you have any "jaquer" wannabe friend? That might be a lead.
Cheers!

True, CD's do lose data, but a lot to do with that is time and and even worse, exposure to light. Bright enough light, like on the front seat of your car, will erase your CD in a few hours.... keeping them in a dark saftey deposit box and swapping every month or so ensures data saftey!!! Thanks!

Any luck with your files?
Sad thing with computers is sh*t sometimes happens.. It reallys sucks when it does. What may have happened: You might have gotten a virus that had not had a fix released yet, file system corrupted, or maybe uninstalled something with a bad uninstaller..

i know this might be a bit rude but u should have copied the file before this happened and put it somewhere else on your harddrive that would mean that nothing would have gone and everything would be alright also renaming the file should keep the contents fine so that when it did happen the files were not deleted from the copied file too.
Cheers

Eugenio,
Just a thought. You guys know a LOT more about computers than I do, but just over a week ago my system basically shut down. I also use Norton, (Symantec Corporate), and Adaware, but these just did not pick up the spyware that had somehow gotten in. I took it to two "professionals", and in the end I had to install two programs, Spyware and Malware. It may be possible that you have a virus or spyware floating around in there. Those two programs may clean it up I hope anyway. Just a thought. Hope you get it fixed, that's rotten luck.

Well, thanks for caring about this guys!
I was not able to recover most of the files, but I could get my printed version of the '6 months investigation' at school, so took some photocopies of it and at least it made me feel better =) (photocopies = mexican antique version of 'scanner')
I'd had some weird troubles with trojan horses detected by Norton Firewall (happened exactly 3 times until now, one of them was recent) but I have not noticed any performance drop / loss of files /spyware / pop-ups in my PC, so Norton might have deleted them anyways....
Besides, some classmates offered to send me some of their files to fill 'My Documents' as much as I could possibly do, so that will help a lot too (thank God there's still good people out there, here (my school) and RIGHT HERE)
I guess I'll need to get some new HD, that is better than my current "Fujitsu - 19 Gigabytes Hard Drive" eh?
thanks so much for your help people!!
Best regards

Eugenio,
just a suggestion, but what I do is use an external USB hard drive and use it strictly for backup of my stuff... no CDs to worry about - it's actually an enclosure, so I can copy all my digital pictures of the family onto an old 10GB hard drive and then stuff it in the safety deposit box, as well as other "must not lose" stuff... once a month, I back it up to a different drive and swap them out at the box - just in case...
the nice thing about the external hard drive is you can back up your flight sim stuff on it too.... then next time your system goes nuts and you need to reinstall windows, you have your fs9.cfg, etc. and don't have to spend alot of time reconfiguring your system.
good luck with getting the files back - the bummer is that hard drives can just die on the spot - no warning - so it pays to backup stuff regularly - you may go 3 years and never have a problem, but you might not...

Thanks George, that's actually a good idea....... I have my FS addons backed up in CDs (currently I have 9 of them w/700 mb in addons *wow*) but that's not good enough.....
I have been thinking about gettin a new HD, an USB HD ... I don't know much about brands, but when I was doing my school job during December, I had to work with an USB IOMEGA 80Gb. HD, and I found out it quite awesome: loads fast, has a lot of space, external, etc....
Now, if anyone knows about this stuff, I'd like some opinions... just for you to know, my wallet is skinny nowadays, I've managed to survive with less than 40 bucks for 3 months (don't ask how the heck could I do that hahahha) ... SO ... any "affordable "HD's outhere ????

Can someone post a link to that "malware" program? I do a lot of spyware removal on the side and NEVER heard of that. I just use Ad-aware and Spybot..

Eugenio,
I've had some exp. with drives and systems. You DON'T want to get Seagate or Western Digital; they're the only ones I've ever seen fail. Secondly, if you think you've lost files DON'T defrag the drive, this definitely will remove them if they're still in existence. Since you're a student you might try http://www.academicsuperstore.com Don't know if they're US only but they've got Maxtor 120 GByte drives for USD $90. I can't remember the file name but http://www.download.com has got a shareware 'file finder'
program. It recovers deleted items. I used to have it after suffering the same plight as yourself but have since gone to external USB CD-RW. The only problem I had with the program was that it made a -LONG- list of recoverable files. Now I run registry healer twice a week and don't have the -LONG- list problem.

Thanks Chris and Barrie, both links are very useful, specially Academic Superstore, seems quite complete.
Unfortunatelly, I have done defrags already.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions, I found out that IOMEGA's HD are affordable and able to be bought here in Mexico, so I might get one of those.
Best regards..

If you prefer a drive you CAN'T get in Mexico send me an email and we can probably work something out. I should think that buying online doesn't put any borders anywhere. I like Maxtor and/or Quantum but then again my favorite color is camouflage!
