Just installed a new video card. ( actually pretty small) 64MB ddr nvidia AGP card. I put the card into the correct slot. ( No need to uninstall drivers because my video was on board). Installed most current drivers from Nvidia and chipset from intel. After the installation was complete I started FS9 and began my flight. After about 5 min. my system completely shuts off. I have checked to make sure the card was seated properly and that everything was connected. As far as I can see nothing is wrong. The one thing I did notice is that my power supply and all the fans were very hot!!!. Does anyone know what could be wrong. I even called the computer manufactuer to find out what card is compatiable and this is what I was told to purchase. If anyone has any knowledge with video cards it will be greatly apprectiated.
Thanks,
James

what size power supply do you have and what is connected to it. Your mobo may have a power down protection against overheating.

Sounds similar to the problem that I had a few months ago. I had to get a new video card, despite adding tons of fans to my computer.

The power supply is very small. I asked the tech guy here at work and he seems to think that my computer is overheating as well. The only problem is that it contiues to happen even when I remove the video card. So much for doing things yourself....This is the 3rd video card that I have purchased in a week. Now I just want the so so graphics back and to be able to play again.

what kind of system do you have by chance? clone or a brand name? some of the E-machines and stuff have minimal power supplies (like 90 watts!) and you really want to have at least 350 watts - in fact, I think the Nvidia FX5750 I have recommends more than that... if you have a clone, swapping out the power supply is a 5 minute job.

I have a dell dimention 4600c with 1GB ram and 80GB hard drive. The computer is very small and compact. I think the problem is exactly what everyone is saying. My power supply is to small to run my system, FS, plus render all the graphics without overheating. I think...I could be wrong its almost like to the system is shutting down before any damage can take place. Thanks for all of your help. I guess I'm off to purchase a new power supply.

Regardless of the old video being onboard or not, you still should un-install the old drivers and when you install drivers for the new card get the LATEST ONES off the manufacturer site.
Also, if your comp has a lot of dust that does not help..

Jim:
Did you go into your bios and disable the onboard video chip? If not that could definitely be causing a conflict that would crash your system. Also make sure that your video is set to boot from the AGP slot.

Bill said exactly what I was going to say..thats the root of your problem...disable your onboard video...set it to AGP...set your agp apeture to 256 if it has that option in your bios..dont matter if your card is 64mb or not..just set it to 256...
But your heat issues should go away when you disable the onboard video...you may have to install a couple of cooling fans..if you need info where to get them, email me and ill hook you up.

also...low grade motherboards will overheat badly, and there is nothing really to fix that, except get a new, better quality motherboard...most name brand computers use very low grade stuff...I always recomend getting a custom built system.

James, ASUS makes great motherboards - you'll be just fine - and as the CPU prices come down, you can even upgrade the CPU on the system cheap - best of all, with the clone - you can control all the pieces and upgrade whatever you need over the years.
Glad to see that you have 1GB memory on it... that will make a big difference - the less memory you have, the more tendency the system will have to use the hard drive as memory, and that really slows things down, which is why we say go for more memory versus a faster processor (within reason of course)
Good luck and happy flying!
