I am a computer technician in real life, so I know a little about hardware and software. So if anyone needs any help I'll do my best to help out.

Thanks Jason, very nice of you to offer your help. Alot of us here build/fix our own machines, and sometimes get hung up on the odd probelms and crashes here and there, especially since most of us try to optimise the performance of our machines, so we have things for your expertise to do here at times. We have been having alot of discussion lately on the compatability problems with the new ATI Radeon 9700/9800 Pro video cards. David Schaum in a post above is having a problem with this right now.
I recently had to change my motherboard from An Asus P4G8X Deluxe with a 7205 chipset to an Asus P4P800 Deluxe with an I 865PE chipset to overcome the problems I had with this. Now it all works perfectly, but I spent many months fighting with it trying in vain to find an answer, all I found were small fixes to a much bigger problem that need a whole new peice of equipment.
Anyway, thanks for your help, we can use it

I have a really strong feeling that my issue is going to be the motherboard as well. I tried to cut a corner and save a few dollars by purchasing the Syntax SV400. It was on sale for $59 from $79. I had never heard of them before, but it had all the features I needed, and it is their top of the line board.
Well, when the new video card comes, I'll install it and turn the computer on once. If I have the same problem, then the money is down the drain and I'll head out to buy either an MSI or an ASUS motherboard.
Larry, Do you have a preference?

I prefer Gigabyte or Asus MB's. I've never had one fail on me yet.

I personally like the Asus boards, but I also like Abit. I haven't really had much experience with anything else other than Intel boards which is what we buy at work. I would have to say the main thing is to get a quality board even though you have to pay a little more. Also quality memory and a decent video card doesn't hurt either.
Here are my suggestions for a set up:
Motherboard:
Intel based: Abit IS7, Asus P4P800, Gigabyte 8S655FX
AMD based: Abit NF7S, Asus A7N8X-DLX, Epox 8RDA+
Processor:
Intel: P4
AMD: AthlonXP/Barton
Memory: Crucial, Corsair, Mushkin, Kingston
Video: ATI, Nvidia (which is better???)
