Hey David:
Your upgrade depends on two major things: the motherboard and the budget
and it also depends on what you want the PC for..... if you're just gonna upgrade it for FS, don't spend a fortune in a monster video card and pProcessor, jsut spend in RAM to upgrade it to over 512MB (I have 640 and works great), but if you have the money and really want a gaming PC, upgrade the processor, then upgrade to a nice video card (I heard that ATI is better for FS, but Nvidia also rocks) and after that upgrade the RAM to over a gigabyte, which is more than enough...
Look out for your motherboard, you can't include a monster 3 Ghz processor in a mobo that won't handle over 2.4 ghz !!!
Hope this helps...

I don't know much about brands, maybe someone else can help you with that, but about the cost, you have now 256RAM, so u'd need another 256RAM card, that would be not over 30 bucks, it's a good way to begin upgrading =)

Your best bet is to match what is in your PC right now. When you start mixing up the memory chips, it can actually damage the performance. Even though you may match your 256mb of PC2700 RAM (just an example) with another stick of Brand XYZ PC2700 256mb of RAM to make 512MB, you may not see any improvement as different memory is manufactured differently from company to company. You may not believe it, but there is both good and bad quality RAM.
My recommendation is to use the Ballistix brand. I use 3.0 gigs of this RAM now and there isn't anything that FS can throw my way that'll slow these monster chips down. I do use a small cooler fan for the memory chips though. I read somewhere on a tech forum that when you're pumping ponies through your system that the heat from the PC can slow the memory performance. Don't know how true it is, but I installed the fan just the same.

Get at LEAST 768MB RAM (DDR would be best). That will change a lot.
