Okay, remember that clicking monitor problem that developed while I was working on that Birmingham scenery? It's back again.
Using FS2004, I flew BHM-ATL earlier this afternoon, and had no trouble with that short trip. I thought "Great, I finally flew a complete outbound flight from Birmingham, and the computer didn't throw a fit."
About 2:30 PM, this afternoon, I rebooted the computer, and prepared to fly Delta 617 to Philadelphia. I was excited, since finally, I would get to try out the Dawgs1 departure out of Atlanta.
Flight proceeds normally, and I execute the Liberty Visual approach to runway 27L at PHL. About the time, I turn to final, about one mile out....
.....CLICK CLACK!!!!!
The main monitor goes through its clicking cycle, as though it is being turned off and on. The second monitor, goes haywire, and acts like a television with the vertical hold gone crazy. The FS sound stops as well. I turn both monitors off, and turn them back on. The main one continues to click clack. The second monitor goes on and off.
I'm wondering what the trouble is here.

Sounds like either a heat issue, or your video card is about to die. I would recommend removing the side panel from your computer, and making sure that the fan on the video card is clean and running. If so, try running the computer with the side panel off, and see if that stops the problem. If so, your problem is heat related. If not, might be time for a new video card. If you need any more help, let me know.

I had the same problem and I finally realized it was indeed associated with heat. I cleaned out any dust from my CPU and the monitor as well as moving things around a little to ensure better air circulation. Things have been fine since then.

1. This problem occurs primarily on itineraries out of Birmingham on FS2004. As much as I fly DVA flights out of Atlanta, this hasn't cropped up at Atlanta.
2. I flew the Continental Express ERJ-145 from IAH to BHM, the day before yesterday. I flew in real life on Continental Express from Houston to Birmingham at the end of last month, and I wanted to sim that route, to see if things were working out.
3. I had FS2004 for a year, before this problem started occuring. This problem has yet to occur on FS2002. Why could this be?

You should also look at the amount of load you are putting on your graphics card. FS2004 is much more graphically "intense" than FS2002. Also, compare the complexity of scenery you are using at BHM to the ATL. If it is in fact more "complex" than what you are using at ATL, that supports the theory that you are putting too much load on your card as someone else suggested. Just guesses here.

I saw the ATI 9800 Pro at Staples today, but it won't work with Windows 98SE. (Yeah, I know. I would have had XP on here, had the guy who built this computer, not recommended I go with 98SE.)

Not too hard to switch video cards, just make sure you get th right one for the type of slot you have, either PCI or AGP. and if your system can run XP i would reccomend it over 98SE any day

My computer just had some "exploratory surgery", by my friend, and he vacuumed the dust out of it. He wants to go ahead and replace the plug between the ATI 8500 card and the second monitor. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Did a flight tonight, and the problem has continued.
This computer was custom built for me, and the person who built it, I can't reach him. I'm trying to find out what kind of slots this machine has.
This is what I'm leaning toward.

from what ive heard the SE's are the lower end cards, and if you have a AGP slot, i would use that instead of a PCI slot, it will give you better performance. Do you by chance know the motherboard manufacturer and model? should say it on the board when you open the case up. With that we could find out if you have an AGP slot.

I think my ATI 8500 card is a AGP card. Someone confirm that for me.
Who uses a card that is AGP friendly, good performance with FS2004, and can work with Windows 98SE?

Hey Brittany,
If you can, you might want to check with a local computer shop. The problem could be something as simple as the card getting overheated (which could happen if the graphics card's onboard fan is no longer working or clogged with dust).
If you're in Hoover, there's a computer parts shop over on Hwy 150 by the Galleria (actually it's by the Walmart on 150). I've been there before and they seem to be pretty helpful. Otherwise, there's on on 280 by Greystone and I'm sure a bunch more. I'd check with them before you have to spend the money on a new video card.
Good luck,
TRB
