I upgraded my video card to an Asus Nvidia 6600, 28 meg. It would be helpful to me for those using the card if you would share your FS9 display settings that you find give good quality and performance.
Results so far are very encouraging. We are getting a good bump in frame rates and good sharp display. Now it is time to tweak and fine tune.
Also share if you use ASUS Smart Doctor and whether you overclock. Let me know the version of video driver in use, too.
Thanks,

Terry, just for kicks, this is the link on the basis of my card, which i believe is along the same specs of that N6600 card of yours, i think you will find the similarities interesting seeing i bought this card when it first came out. it will also give you some insight on VC terminology.

Robert,
I wrote two water cooler messages after midnight when I was very tired. Both had number errors. Sooner or later I will learn to avoid late night work.
Thanks for pointing out my error.

Tony,
Thanks for the link.
Wow you could spend the rest of your life reading reviews and user experiences not to mention upgrading BIOS, chipset, graphic and sound drivers. All so complicated and involved. But I guess it can be fun to get the most out of your softwared.
BTW, found a bottle neck in my system. The AGP aperature was set at 64 and needed to be at 128. Another one of those gotcha's that the manual fails to reference.

He he, I was wondering if you knew that, You did ask about the added Overclock benifits, Cool bits and riva tuner are good one that OC and give you a bit more tweaking opyions, But One thing you need to be aware of that OC'ng just the slightest puts strain on other components as well

Terry:
Where did you find the AGP speed for the AGP slot? I have been racking my brain for a few weeks already about this to see if I can push more out of my system.
Kind Regards.

Kenneth,
The AGP Graphics Aperture Size is in the BIOS settings that you can access on startup by hitting the DEL key. Nvidia recommends 128MB when using an AGP card. If you have an Nvidia card, go to http://nvida.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/ for a complete list of preferred motherboard BIOS settings.
I get more than a little miffed with video card manufacturers over their almost useless instructions and manuals. Every time I upgrade video cards I encounter problems due to an oversight of not doing something because it isn't specified. It seems that the manufacturers expect all customers to be a 3D Guru and know exactly what has to happen and in the correct sequence.
If you are not a 3D Guru then you suffer through it not working, troubleshooting and reinstalling. This installation was no exception. I'll not bore you with the gorey details.
Are you running the 6600 card? What are your FS9 display settings?

I use dual BFG Tech 6800Ultra's. I have the video settings as most others have them.
Anisotropic Filtering is set to: 8X
Antialiasing is set to 4X
I went into the BIOS settings and saw that the AGP Aperture was set appropriately at512MB for the card I am using.
The link you posted above for some odd reason was not working, however I found the link to the Preferred BIOS Settings page for Nvidia users. It was very helpful. Thanks.
I do not suffer in the FPS area but wanted to know just how much more my system can push. Need to know if she'll be ready for the next wave of 3D video gaming.
Best Regards

Kenneth,
Your rig is very sophisticated compared to mine. I was at the point where I couldn't justify a total hardware upgrade but had to do something to improve graphics for FS9 knowing that in another year I would switch out the motherboard, CPU, video card and hard drives for the next level of technology required for FS200?. In a way it is a bandaid. Truth of the matter the 4200 old video card was probably bottle necked with the 64 meg AGP aperature setting; if I would have discovered that I possibly could have kept it. Oh well, not a big issue.
I learned a lot in the process of the upgrade, like you need to select a BIOS update and a chipset update that are compatible and in sync. Prior to the upgrade you remove and clean the system of video drivers, chipset drivers and sound drivers (on board and PCI cards). Then you update the chipset drivrs first, followed by BIOS upgrade before installing video and then sound drivers. All of this requires a bit of digging at various sites, which was my last lesson. Spend time researching before digging in.

You know, I never really gave much thought at the BIOS updates but may be something worth looking into. I am going to do some digging around dedicated websites for info. I'll shoot you an e-mail if that is okay with you Terry in case I need more help.
Kind Regards.

geforce tweak utility..I have it and it has done wonders for my card and also give you some options in your main nvidia settings window after you run geforce tweak...when you overclock,it has the option to set and test and find the best overclock speed for your card...once it finds those settings,it will set your clock and memory speeds and then give you the option to apply or cancel the changes...let me know if you want it...

I just started using the Riva Tuner app. I have been able to increase the OC speed by 6%. After that I will get an error message. It has helped quite a bit, but notice the draw on the VC's are more than what I am comfortable with. I will be installing an additional PCI slot fan this evening to see if this cools things down a bit.
Regards.

ASUS, the card manufacturer, included a utility, that is memory resident and follows set parameters when OC. What is the name of the geforce tweak utility and is it available for d/l ? Send me the file source URL if you would please.

John,
Flying the PMDG 737-800, a resource hog, on a AMD 1800 with 1 GIG RAM, frame rates locked at 29, I experience 20 -22 fps in graphic intense areas like Hartsfield Jackson. Flying online with 10 aircraft in the area this drops to 6 - 10 fps in KATL area.
As you may know frame rates are just one measure of video card performance. Even at low frame rates I get no stuttering and can land and taxi without problems something I couldn't do with my 4200 nvidia card.

I appreciate it Terry. I know frame rates arent the end all I was just curious. As what you were getting with the processor you had. I am upgrading two PC's at present, 1 that I will you exclusvely for FS and Homework and 1 that will be a general use for everyone else at the house, and was considering putting a 6600gt in it. As I never want to have to fly with a PIII 1ghz and GF2 again LOL.

Man, one could get a migraine from even contemplating swapping out video boards. This tweak, and that setting, this chipset, that aperture. Or purchasing one of those fabulous addon aircraft. Who in the heck can keep up with all that stuff??!! Kind of reminds me of a scuba bumper stick I bought a few years back: "Remember when diving was dangerous and sex was safe?"

Dan,
I know exactly what you are saying. I get anxious and very cranky every time I have to deal with my FS PC video card, whether it is the hardware or software. When I did a mid-term upgrade, I researched the ultmate selection for weeks only to discover afterwards that my AGP BIOS setting was probably the bottle neck all along. It is a process of discovery that I would not have tripped into otherwise.
