Hey guys, ok here it goes. I have just bought the ATI radeonx700pro. Iam not really sure if its a good one to get or not but i hope you could help out while i can still return it. Well i intalled the card and iam not really thrilled do far. Its a 256mb card and when i run my new pmdg737 and simflyers scenery at lax it is still pretty choppy and big time catch up time. Now i have a pent 4ht 3.0ghz processor, and only 512mb of ram. I thought that the card would make up for the ram. I tried messin with the settngs in fs9 for display wise, but iam not really sure what to set them at. Does anyone have a recomondation to do in the settings of fs9? did i buy the wrong card? OR....... do i need more RAM?/?? thanks for your time, iam pretty upset right now that i spent t

Ian,
The x700pro is a PCI-e card. This is the review of the card at Guru 3D http://www.guru3d.com/article/content/174/
Suggest that you confirm that it is installed correctly in the PCI-e slot. Next be certain that you are using the most recent proven video driver for the card. Note the key word is proven. The latest versions are not always checked out or for that matter optimal for your card and system.
When you installed the card did you first remove the old video driver and did you clean your system of old video driver files? You should use an application Driver Cleaner PRO (freeware) found at http://www.drivercleaner.net If there are legacy files present it could interfere with software performance.
The card should have utilities to tune the card for your system. If it has a profile to configure it for 3D games select it.
Do not configure the card for antialiasing and anisotrophic filtering. FS9 software should be used to configure and control these features if you so elect. Antialiasing is not always desireable. Depends upong your preferences. Frankly I cannot detect a difference. Anisotrophic filtering does make a difference for me. I use double filters. MIPS are another performance issue that you should conduct trial and errors the most suitable for your eyes and the lowest setting possible.
In terms of system performance in your test. You subjected the entire system to the most stringent test. LAX alone is a major chore and adding additional textures with Simflyers created an extra workload. If you were online as well this too affects performance.
It would help your system to add another 512 mb of ram for situations like the one you describe. I beliieve if you ask around you will find that most flight simmers run 1 gig of ram.

Terry has a very good point - the fastest way to speed up the machine is to put another 512MB of RAM in it - it'll do wonders for you.
I don't know anything about ATI cards - I have an NVIDIA 7800GT on a P4 3.4GHz machine with 1GB of RAM on an Intel AW-8 PCI-Express motherboard - I can turn full graphics on and get great frame rates.

I agree that adding RAM is best in most situations, however there is a caveat. The motherboard and chipset will also come into play as well as your processors FSB and Cache capacities. Chris Gagnon just purchased an additional 512MB of RAM for his Dell PC and it worked wonders. However we are talking with default FS sceneries here.
There have been a few people that have gone to great lengths to add RAM to find out later that it did not do much for their FPS. If you are running a low to mid end system, you will need to accept parting with some of the eye candy that is found in FS9. It is the price most have to pay without going out and breaking the bank on a full blown gaming setup.
From the sounds of the issue described by Ian, we may be faced with a MB/Chipset issue. There are ways around that however by fussing around with the FS settings and card settings.
Try 2X on Antialiasing and 4X on Anisotropic settings for your card. That is the baseline setting and then go from there. Do not allow these settings to be Application Controlled. You will use many more system resources that way.
You will also need to ensure a properly defragmented hard drive. And you may want to think about killing any unecessary programs running in the background on your system. Windows XP is notorious for chewing up resources.
Also, make sure your processor is prioritized to allocate resources to running programs and not background programs. Also, ansure that your memory usage is set to give a higher priority to System Cache and not programs. These changes require that you reboot your PC afterwards.
What I have done to optimize my hard drive is the following:
- Increasing CPU priority.
Run Regedit>Find this key> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Priority\Control\
Set the Win32PrioritySeparation to 38 DECIMAL (or 26 HEX). Please ensure you are familiar with REGEDIT or find someone who is. If you screw this one up, your system WILL BE UNBOOTABLE!!!! I am not to be held responsible.
- Disable Last File Access Stamping.
This one is easy. Open your DOS command prompt and type in the following:
FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLELASTACCESS 1
This stops your system from using resources to write time stamps into the system registry.
- Turn off Windows indexing:
Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Components. Deselect Indexing Service
or
Start>Run> then type in services.,sc. Scroll to Indexing Service and select disable.
Sorry for the long post guys. Couldn't pass this one up. Hope some of this helps you out there Ian.
Best Regards.

Well 2 Gigs will certainly make a whole lot of difference over 512Kb however not sure about the difference between that and 1 Gig. If you run alot of programs in the background it should but not sure whether to go for 2 or 1.

I have a radeon 9800 and it's the second only to x900. I also have 512mb ram and have turned off many background programs and my game is still some what slow. the best i can say is check your virtual memory and turn off some background programs.

The other 512mb of ram should make a HUGE difference in your system.
