I just wanted to give a big, jumbo, wide-body THANK YOU to everyone who came out today for Trijet Thunder II and flew from the snows of Salt Lake City to Albuquerque. I learned a lot of stuff to do, and not to do for next time. (Biggest to do: Check the ARTCCs for preferred routing beforehand so they're not switching departures on us, and make sure ARTCC staffing is ready for us!)
I hope everyone had fun despite the glitches, and I hope y'all come back out for the next Trijet Thunder, probably sometime in February. If you have a suggestion for a route, please let me know. This event is for everybody, not just me or the 727 program, so speak up!

First of all, thank YOU for the great organization; yeah SLC CTR changed the DEP, so what? stuff happens
I also learned a couple of things today, and it was cool cuz this was my first online flight in 4 months! I thought i'd forget some of the ATC comms, but I didn't, I only screwed up 1 comm once...
Still, I'd like to see another Trijet Thunder sooner than FEbruary, cuz by then, I'll be having way toooo much work again, and won't be able to attend it
Again, i loved the event, and flying with you guys. thanks all!

Thanks for arranging it and flying it with us, Moose! I had lots of fun... the normal group flights I usually can't make (too late at night on Sunday, gotta work the next day, and they are too crowded - I'd wind up holding like Oliver for 10 years or till I ran out of gas...)
Would anyone be interested in a fly-in where we come into an airport from all different directions, or has this already been done? I dunno - "converge on KSLC" type of thing? a bunch from SFO, SEA, LAS, LAX, ABQ, DEN, ATL, etc...??? that's kinda like a TGIF isn't it?

YES George YES, this is truly needed This needs to be in a thread by itself. It got buried here and I'm glad I read all of it.
IF we have an event that posts an arrival airport and a 30 minute window for arrival--look what this does>>>
1) No more trying to get 20- 40 aircraft clearances--taxi instructions --etc - IF YOU WERE A SALT LAKE CONTROLLER BY YOURSELF LAST NIGHT WOULD YOU WANT TO LOG IN ???
2) This would allow the DVA Academy to train pilots on proper flight planning, fuel usage, ETE, etc rather than having a flight plan posted as a crutch. Currently they only have to put the .pln in their folder and show up at a specific place and time. This way would require knowing when to depart so one may arrive on time
3) Having dozens of aircraft arrive in a small time window from different directions is much more fun and challenging for the pilots and ATC.
I strongly agree with your suggestion and this is something that needs serious consideration for future group flights

George,
That's similar to TGIF. TGIF is comprised of 4 (I think) airlines. One airline will depart from a specific airport and like wise with the other 3. 99% of the time they're departing from different airports.
The issue to consider is if the flight is an actual Delta flight for PiReps. I don't believe Delta has a SFO-YVR route. So to PiRep it, you'd have to fly out of SLC or ATL or CVG (wherever there's a Delta flight to YVR). Maybe a better way would be to stagger departures. There are some pilots that like to leave early, some that like to be in the thick of it, and some prefer to be the last ones. We could set up a system whereas we'd have groups of 5 or so depart at a specific time. That way pilots won't be in a 45 minute holding pattern.
Or we could make Group Flights so that no matter where you left from you can still PiRep them.
I agree with Vince on the DVA Academy idea though. We could have a special course just on Group Flights. The more prepared pilots are, the smoother these flights go.

I like the idea of staggering. Personally I like the lead the pack and I've been fortunate enough to be the leading aircraft in two of my three online events. It's not only good for me to avoid a mess but it's good for others who don't have to wait for my slow-butt approaches. :-) I follow the Vref speeds religiously, sometimes to the detriment of pilots waiting to land behind me. :-)

George,
Yes this is done quite a bit. Over all I'm not opposed to this kind of event, but here are some of the issues:
1. Requires lots of route planning.
2. Pilots tend to fly the same route to "experance the same things as everyone else". (Thus some of #1 is wasted energy.)
3. Requires a lot of ARTCC resources.
4. Holding patterns will increase since now you have 51+ AC coming in from all sides.
Some of these are only minor, but are still things to think about.
Cheers,
Andrew

First great night on sunday KSLC to Vancouver, went around in circles for 35 minutes.........Why not stagger the releases, for example: Use Jax and Atl and Miami, all three airports have very active ATC. Have flights in and out of each airport to airports into airports in the area, just the the real guys.
It is great to sit on the ramp and see 25 DVA members waiting in line to go in the same direction(ie KSLC last night with no ATC), but this would not tax the ATC systems of the airports and give all a chance to participate. Post slot times on the DVA Website and have those interested pick a time to depart from which airport, KATL, KMCO, KMIA, KFLL, KRSW, KTPA, KJAX, etc..... just an idea

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Andrew, I think ATC would get a better workout though - like at KATL if we were coming in from all 4 STARs - it just seems more natural, that's all. I guess there would be nothing wrong with arriving at the fly-in airport destination from a different departure location (so long as there was a different departure we could fly into - for example KSLC - you could fly in from just about anywhere, but Curacao... nope I'd build my own route of course
Of another twist, Scott - what about something like Houston, Dallas, Chicago or New York, etc., where there are 2 airports in close proximity (and in New York's case there are 3) - that might be interesting...
