SELCAL codes are what ATC uses to contact you if you are not responding. They use them a lot on HF frequencies. You can use one online by putting it in the box where you log in. Be sure not to use the - though.

I'll take a shot at giving you a good example of the SELCAL code usage:
Say you are flying on one of the NAT (Notrh Atlantic Track) routes from New York to Paris. This is a long flight, and most of the time you will have to have the squelch of your radios set so that you can hear ATC (who are hard to hear out there due to the range you are from their stations), which is very annoying. When ATC wants to get ahold of you, they call you using the code, and it rings a tone in the cockpit that alerts you to their attempt at contacting you. This allows you to fly those long distances on the fringe of radio range without having to have all that static pumping through your headphones for hours on end.
Hope this help.

Additionally, SELCAL is simply short for Selective Calling. Airlines began using them to decrease the amount of radio traffic on company frequencies. With the introduction of SELCAL, each aircraft was able to have a unique code and if an airline had to get a message to a particular aircraft, it could call it up by selcting the appropriate code, which would send an aural tone to the flight crew and they would then monitor the radio for the message. Things have changed a bit since then with FMC and MCDU systems. Airline operations centres can still call a particular aircraft using the code, but the message is sent and displayed as text on the FMC. As Steve said, its normally used on HF but is capable of operating on VHF frequencies as well.

What is the application of a SELCAL code for our online flying here at DVA? I reserved a SELCAL code but how does it do anything for us? Does it show up in ACARS or something?
