OK, I have a SERIOUS problem somewhere. PLEASE HELP! My FS9 sim keeps shutting down on me. This is the third time since yesterday I have tried to make the KSFO to PHNL run. I get in about 2 hrs flight time, and then the sim just stops, and completely disappears from the screen as if I have never loaded it. ASv6 and Servinfo keep running.
I have not made any added downloads, the only thing I did, on the advice of a fellow DVA member, was to delete the Configuration file, was told that it would rebuild, which it has. I flew from KMSP to KSFO w/ Matt. Whitaker, and no problems at all. However, between yesterday and now the sim has shut down on me 3 times. This has me extremely concerned because as many of you can understand I NEED this sim, especially since online flight has become addictive.
Could this be an overheating problem, (fan appears to be working) or dirty lens eye? I hope it is simple, maybe an adjustment somewhere? OMG, Please HELP!!
Many thanks,
Andrew

I'm assuming that it has run successfully between those three shutdowns, is that correct? Also, what operating system are you running? If it's XP does it eventually give you an error report to send to microsoft? I have had FS crap out on me every now and then. Usually it's when it's just loading scenery for the first time or if I do something complicated and overtax my poor processor. It may very well be an overheating problem, though I don't know much about the symptoms. Try leaving the case open for a while to get more air in there and see if things improve. You can also look for a free program out there called PC Wizard. It can tell you just about anything knowable about your computer, including the temperature of the processor and hard disks.

One thing I read a month or so ago, when was the last time you actually cleaned your case? Your fan may sound like its working, but of you have a vid card with an onboard fan etc, dust gets in there and clogs up the works. Take some time and see if that helps. Its a place to start anyway.

OK, thanks guys. I am using a Dell P4, 2.80Ghz, w 2GB Ram, Windows XP service Pack 2, Radeon x800 Series. I am not a computer guru, but until yesterday, it was working fine. Colin, I have now tried unsussessfully 3 online flights, the last successful one was on Wed. this past week. I have run every spyware/adware program that I have including defragmenting the drive, which is something I do every other day anyway.
Dane, I will open up the case and check for the dust. Hopefully it is that simple. Thanks to both of you guys for responding, REALLY appreciate it. Will post the results here.
Regards,
Andrew. It sucks to be "grounded".

OK, just cleaned it out. Lot of dust on the fan blades, hoping it is just that simple. Going to load the sim, and just let it fly itself from KSFO to PHNL, just see if it works any better. Keeping my fingers crossed,..............

Well, that didn't work. Flew for about 2.5 hrs then promptly shut down again, no warning just quit. I am at a complete loss on this one. PLEASE, any other suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.

just a thought, is it in the same place each time? Could be scenery related.

Hi David. It keeps shutting down over water, somewhere around the BEATS intersection heading into Hawaii, so there is no scenery, only water. I'm thinking that I may have to reinstall at this point. What I have noticed is that the screen blinks, in other words, like something isn't in sync. somehow. I am going to uninstall the Boeing 737 DVA model and then reinstall it again. Maybe there is a problem w/ that. Running out of ideas fast, thanks anyway, man, there just HAS to be a fix for this somewhere.

Andrew,
David may be correct. Have you tried a flight from say the west coast to Atlanta? It doesn't matter that you are over water when this happens. What's important is the latitude and longitude of the CTD location. There have been many known CTD's associated with corrupted/defective scenery files.

OK, I hope that it is just that simple then. Actually, Vincent, that is a good idea. I wasn't aware of the problems associated w/ corrupted/defective files unless they were over land. I downloaded the newer version of the 737 from our Fleet library, I'm wondering if it may have been a software problem to boot because the newer downloads have slight alterations.
1) Going to try a cross country like suggested going east instead of west
2) Failing that I will try to use the PMDG see if that makes a difference.
Failing this, I may consider a reinstall. However due to the addons I have, not sure that is a good idea at this point.
Guys, I so appreciate the responses and suggestions and even if this doesn't work all of you have my thanks. I will post my results here as before. Heres hoping and praying...................................................

Well guys, THANK YOU for your assistance. I just completed a VFR flight of over 6 hrs flight time from KSFO to KATL and landed successfully on rwy. 27R. No glitches to report. One thing I did have to change was the settings from the sim to match the settings on the screen. I am wondering if that might have added to the problems. Again, guys, thank you for your help and advice. I would think that after this long haul w/ no problems, perhaps it is fine now. I wish all of you a very pleasant evening!!
Best regards to the four of you,
Andrew.
