I recently noticed that the B737-800 program has 158 pilots, and the MD-88 program has only 26. I didn't think I'd ever see that day, but DVA is going to through a bit of a "hiring freeze" in the 737-800 program until we get the numbers balanced.
Mark McCauley as our VP of HR will be assigning all new pilots that qualify for Stage B aircarft into the MD-88, not the 737. While we haven't completely closed off promotions into the 737-800 for the time being, you are "strongly encouraged" to consider the MD-88 program. As I told the senior staff this evening, in order to pass your 737 check flight you'll need to grease a landing within six inches of the centreline in CAT IIIc conditions and total instrument failure. We'll be more reasonable with the MD-88.
I see this as only a temporary situation, and it's only due to the great success of the 738 program. With good people like Tyrone Weston and Awais Ahsan heading up our MD-88 program, I forsee the Mad Dog reaching the same great level of success.
Cheers!
Luke

Man, if I didn't already have something else going, like my L-1011, I'd join the MD-88 program, I LOVE that airplane. I still go out of my way to find flights that have it, and file PIREPS for it, and probably fly it twice as much as the 737.

Maybe we should put all our new pilots that have qualified themselfes for a Bravo Class aircraft in their initial questionaire into the MD88 programm instead of the 737 programm. That would definetly raise the numbers of pilots within the MD88 programm.
@Tyrone: Is there a chance to get rated for the triple seven and the MD11 for MD88 Senior Captains (if I take a look at DVA's promotion guide this would not be possible - but maybe there are exceptions ;)? I'd like to take the challenge of being a MD88 S/C, but I want to have my ratings for the big birds first.

In the promotion guide, it lists the 737 as the next step up after CRJ, then the MD-88. Some might be confused, thinking you must be hold a 737 rating before going on to the MD-88.

Stefan, if you read lukes post it will say that all new hires that make the score for the B class will be placed into the MD88 not the 737.

As a Stage B captain, all that is necessary is the successful passing of the MD-88 FO exam, which I see you have already done. Welcome to the MD-88!
Cheers!
