Hello. I'm new here, and I think I will be taking on the whole online flying "thing" pretty soon. But, I need a headset. I am looking for a USB set with a built-in sound card, or I think I can use a standard one and use my Integrated Audio for the ATC audio along with my PCI Audio Card for FS9 Sounds. Is it possible to use Integrated Audio and a PCI Audio Card at the same time? OK, back to the headset. I would like it to be relatively cheap, like 50 bucks max... Nothing special like 5.1 surround sound or anything like that. I am going to look at BestBuy tomorrow (as I look for a new Athlon 64 system) for a headset. Can anyone recommend one to me?
Thanks,
Nick

I have a Plantronics unit, that connects to the sound card via sockets in the front of my PC. Mike and Audio seperate. Works great and very durable. I go through a headset about once very 15 months...lol

The headset is a USB connection only. It doesn't use your internal soundcard at all. Everything is built into the headset.

If you have a Comp USA near to you you can get the 20$ behind the head headphone and mike which works very well. Mine was submerged under 6 inches of water for 5 days and still works fine

Yeah, I have a CompUSA, BestBuy, CircuitCity, etc... It shouldn't be hard to find either one.

I just purchased a Cyber Acoustics AC-840 which is a half headset with a boom. It works great for FS amd flying online because it acts a separate sound output. That means I can put Squawk Box and ATC through the headset and then still hear the cockpit and FS2Crew out of my other uncovered ear. The volume control on the headset itself is a nice feature for that controller whose mic is just way too loud.

Now I have a question. Do ALL Headsets made for gaming on your computer allow you to choose what audio goes to it? Or does it depend on whether the heatset is USB or not?

If you get a headset that plugs into your soundcard, i.e. a standard audio connection, you a restricted to the ability of your soundcard. I believe some sound cards will let you do separate routings for some sound vs other sounds but I'm not sure of that and its probably only in higher end sound cards.
If you like the feature of choosing where the audio goes, choose a USB mic / headset. The price is not necessarily different, and you can get a USB headset in your preferred sub $50 range, so I would recommend that route.
Enjoy the bestbuy trip

Well, I went today, but I forgot to look at BestBuy (I went there for a Hard Drive) then I went to CompUSA, and thier selection was a little small, I couldn't find those Logitech Ones, just the behind the ear headsets. I like the big "standard" headsets, so I guess I will look in Tennessee over the course of the month while I'm down there. Thanks Everyone!

Nicholas, any USB headset works by just plugging it in and away you go (Windows XP, at least). The software such as MSN Messenger, Teamspeak, SB3, etc. all allow where the sound is heard and what mic you use.
The problem with most headsets is that the mic is on the headset and the sound from the airplane and ATC/voice come into the same headset/speakers.
With the USB setup, you can separate all of that without the use of an extra sound card. Just plug it in and go
