On the behalf of ZJX and ZHU I would like to congratulate Delta Virtual Airlines on winning the 1st Annual Battle of the Airlines Event. The official count has Delta with a total of ninety one (91) arrivals and departures in our airspace. I wish to personally thank each and everyone of you that participated and made my first event such a success. We had a great time and look forward to doing it again next year. Until the next event, I would like to invite all delta pilots to continue visiting our airspace. we look forward to seeing you all again soon

Awsome! I am glad we won this event! I know I saw soooo much traffic, and it was causing me to have alot of problems hearing the ATC because it was breaking up so darn bad, but had an awsome time! Congrats to the entire airline and everyone who participated!

Was it ever going to go any other way? I had a blast! That was my first on-line event - as my two, yes, count 'em, TWO missed approaches testified! I've never seen so much heavy metal! United, American, some I'd never heard of, Americans, Canadians, French, Brits - I even saw an F 15 stooging around MSY - but most of all Delta Birds! Hundreds of 'em, flying, landing, taking off.... it was brilliant! Thank you very much to the organisers, a special thank you to the approach controller at MSY who was very tollerant of my ham-fisted flying. I landed at about 00:30 and just hung around the MSY ramp for a further two hours. Just a-watchin and a-listenin! One thing I learned. As good as I think I am, I am no where near good enough! I sat dumbstruck wathcing a Delta 767 - I forget who, on a five mile visual final, slow her down from over 240 knots and grease her down on runway 19. If I ever get to be HALF as good as some of you guys, I'll be a happy man.
I like being part of a winning team. Congratuations to us all. Congratualtions to the controllers, who were awesome. I for one will certainly be flying "Houston Skies" - as the ground controller at MSY was so fond of saying last night.

Sorry if some of you had to hold, of got lost in the shuffle, but we were really glad to see all of you in our airspace.

Thanks again to all who participated. This is definitely a feather in the DVA hat! a Virtual Airline is only as good as the pilots who make it up and you should all be very proud of this accomplishment. I managed a pathetic 2 points but my hats off to all who managed to attend. Every point counts and I heard we won MSY by 7 points!
ATC was top notch. I think Rick Svatos is the most laid back controller in the world. Nothing phases that guy! He even gave me a direct vector around 4 other aircraft to help me along. If I had not gotten that vector I would not have landed at 1055pm.

I wouldn't say its something to brag about. But, I do think we should appreciate the dedication to this sim and hobby and VA that our pilots turned out in such great numbers for a little friendly competition. Yes, its a virtual award for a computerized flight simulation. We're all cool because we enjoy the sim regardless of the outcome of some event because we love to fly and this is the next best thing to the actual real life flying.
Virtual or not, a lot of pilots logged time on their computers for fun because of this competition and had a great time. If we'd lost I'd be emailing the winners and congratulating them. i sent thankyou notes to all the ARTCC's after every event DVA partakes in (regardless of whether we "win" or not) thanking them for their time and for making our experience a bit more realistic. Following this event, the ZAU chief controller responded to my note indicating that all our pilots received an "A" grade from him and that they noticed some things they need to change on their own end to make things run more smoothly. So, we're learning and they're learning and growing and having fun. A high grade from the controllers shows the quality of this VA in terms of flying online IMHO.
Sorry for the rant but just my 2 cents. I appreciate every pilot here who logs hours with DVA (online or offline) and especially those that take time to attend one of the events Manuel and I plan. That alone is my reward.

Thank you, Andrew. I posted this on the VATSIM forums the other day, but it bears repeating. Banging your chest to bring up the turnout is kinda like the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech or Auburn vs. Alabama rivalries some of my coworkers have; it's a fun way to get excited over things but what really matters is the fact that a lot of people took the time to fly and control on Saturday afternoon. All of those Delta flights in the air increased the experience for the controllers, and increased the experience for the other pilots in the air, just like they provided a good time for us. That's what counts in the long run.
Sure, quality counts more than quantity. But one thing I've learned over the years is that quantity is the sign of a good product, especially in a particularly competetive landscape such as our own. Andrew's right; a good turnout on Saturday or Sunday is a sign that he's doing a good job, putting together events that get all of you off of the couch and into the cockpit on a sunny warm autumn Saturday. It's no different than the feeling I get when I open the ACARS map and see it dotted with aircraft; that's why I do this, and I wouldn't get that reward unless all of you received something of value.
If you feel that we're not providing a good value proposition, there's plenty of alternatives. Heck, you can have the web application source code free for download (it's a few builds behind, but nothing major) along with the ACARS server. Every day we're forced to deliver quality, and the quantity is merely a reflection of that.
Cheers!

I think this VA is near perfect in every aspect. A virtual award for virtual pilots, what more do we need. It is something to be recognized, virtual or not. I personally hold this virtual award high and proud!! I don't see what happens behind the scenes (all the server stuff) to be honest it is all greek to me, the hard work that people put into this is awesome!! I also believe that this VA, is unmatched as far as quality and community.

I think what this also proves is that the basic concepts behind DVA/AFV are pretty darn sound. Namely...
- emphasis on knowledge and flight legs over raw hours behind the screen
- written tests and checkrides that are challenging but not impossible for the "casual" pilot
- custom web code, forums, ACARS, etc. that's all state of the art
- the best "one-stop" freeware fleet library you'll find with automated installers--just click and go
- promoting flying online but not requiring it
A couple of years ago, just after I joined, I remember something Luke said--basically, that he believed that everybody was capable of giving 5% more than they thought they could, and it was DVA's job to get that 5%. And judging by the people we're attracting and keeping, and watching them progress over the past 2 1/2 years, there's something to that.
I think something like the BOTA title in and of itself isn't much more than a little bragging right, but it's a sign that whatever we're doing at DVA, we're doing it right.
