3.2ghz p4 512mb ram ATI9700 graphics card. Its a very good system. I dont need more RAM as i can play fs9 with 30fps and a norton antivirus scan running in the background. Im not allowed to screw with any drivers or anything like that but i am in the process of a LONG defrang and a LONG disk cleanup.

More RAM. 512 is OK, but 1GB would probably give you more breathing room. I believe you when you say it's enough for FS9, since I have on numerous occasions when debugging ACARS had FS9, Eclipse, VB6 and ACARS all open in 1GB and never had any swapping to speak of. I do suspect that FSX will need more.
The other thing I suspect that will be holding you back is the video card. I have a somewhat comparable system (P4 overclocked to 2.9Ghz and a 9800Pro) and my vidcard is staggering with FSX.
Cheers!

I agree with Luke. FS9 is not nearly the resource hog FSX appears to be. RAM will help, especially faster RAM. Remeber there is more to making a fast PC besides the CPU, RAM and Vid Card. If you have a dated moterhboard, a smaller/slower/full hard drive, etc. I'm coming to accept we'll have to live with slower frame rates in FSX than in FS9.

well...save some money to upgrade it, or sell fsx, or just stick with fsx until you have enough money to upgrade it, or do what i did...i bought a new dell XPS 410 and works pretty good on it, unless u want buy or finance a new base computer put some of the goodies yours have and thats it...one question luke? does the 128 MB AGEIA PhysX PCI Physics Card do any changes to FSX or FS9?

Wallace, the last time I asked about FSX supporting the new AGEIA cards I was told that it did not support them, however things may have changed.

Wallace, you might want to have a look at this, I think it will answer your question.
http://www.ageia.com/physx/titles.html
I do not see FSX as a upcoming supported title.

Sorry for the bounce, but I thought I'd try to contribute as I still don't see an answer in this thread besides spending a lot of money.
Greg, there is an array of tweaks you can do to FSX to improve performance, but you absolutely positively need more RAM - save for just one 512mb stick. (If you can afford FSX, you can afford one 512mb stick!) Even on my E6600 with 3gb of ram (and PCI-E 7950GT/512mb), the default performance (everything on 'normal') was below par. I found the tips supplied on the linked page below *extremely* helpful if you're willing to play around in the guts of FSX. (If you understand what the FSX.cfg file is, and what frame rates are, you should be able to follow the instructions, but if you don't understand what they're talking about, don't start playing around with settings unless you're prepared to do a total reinstall of FSX if you break it)
http://www.fsstation.com/articles/flight-simulator-x-performance-tweaks.html
Following that, and setting everything to "High" in FSX, I get around 25FPS at Heathrow (EGLL) and 20FPS at La Guardia (KLGA). Also, if you can afford it get a good defrag program. Windows defrag is ... how can I put it... a pile of crap. Try something more advanced like O&O defrag. If you've never used a third party defrag program like that before, try it - you will notice a *significant* increase in speed for textures and loading times.
Finally, try using default panels rather than the virtual cockpit - VC's use polygons... valuable polygons that could be used rendering the landscape on every single frame. I can't remember how to change the default from 3D to 2D Panel off the top of my head as I'm at work at the moment. (It's in the display settings somewhere).
I hope that helps (somewhat). Good luck.
