Just my opinion, but I wouldn't rush into purchasing VISTA just yet. As a newly released OS, I am sure there are still issues to be ironed out. You may also find, that some of your other favorite applications may not be supported by VISTA. Secondly, I am not a fan of OS "upgrades". Although it costs more to purchase the full version, I think it's a better way to go.
Going with the 1gb, or more, of memory is not a bad idea. I think you will see a marked improvement on performance.

I've got FSX on Vista RC1, and believe me, there's not a whole lot of performance increase. WIll this change in the release version of Vista? I don't know, but I would think probably not. FSX (to the best of my knowledge) still uses DirectX 9, since DirectX 10 hardware is not widely available yet. They are supposed to release an update to FSX that takes advantage of DirectX 10 when the hardware becomes more widely available. At that point, perhaps Vista will help FSX, since Vista includes and was designed for (I believe) DX10.
