For those who are adventurous, you can get a free, full feature version of XPx64 from Microsoft. There is no cost and it is valid for 120-180 days (website says 120 days, confirmation email says 180 days). A word of caution, you must do a clean install and finding 64 bit drivers for wireless networks can be a challenge. 64-bit drivers for most hardware items are now available. 32 bit drivers WILL NOT work. I am running XPx64 now (messed up my PC and had to reload) and have had a 25% boost in FSX frame rates.
Specs:
Athlon 4200 Dual Core
1.5 GB RAM
Radeon 9600, 256 MB vid card
Gigabyte K8U-939 board

I've been running WinXP x64 Pro since August 2005 - i was adventurous at the time i built my pc. Had no problems with it whatsoever. You'll find that most 'reputable' manufacturers have drivers for their products - especially products introduced since the OS came out. OS is very stable and seems to handle memory a lot more efficiently than regular 32bit XP (possibly the reason for your frame increases Rob). Now of course there will be the disbelievers who say ... "yeah but Win XP x64 runs 32 bit programs under a Wow64 shell so there's additional processing required for that" ... true ... but overall the OS just seems to process threads more efficiently than the 32 bit equivalent (the processing throughput for the OS instruction set is faster than the 32bit equiv).
Good luck

Wow, wish you had posted this a couple days ago!!! LOL I just got a new computer and took 2 days installing everything and now I want Xp64. You are saying you have to do a complete reinstall for the entire computer right. Like a wipe clean and then reload everything?

Go out and get yourself an 80gb hardrive for 50 bucks or so. Remove the one you just spent all the time with, install the new one and load up XP64 on that. This way you don't have to go through all the pain and anguish of reloading again if if 64 doesn't work out for you.

I always thought that one would need a 64 bit processor to use the respective version of windows. It works on an x86 machine? Is it "better" than running the 32 bit version on an x86 machine? I have a P4 3.4g w/ HT

You need a 64 bits CPU to run a x64 OS
Supported processors: AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon with Intel EM64T support, Intel Pentium 4 with Intel EM64T support

Jay,
To clearly answer your question, yes the load must be a clean install. Wipe and load. It CANNOT be an upgrade.

darn, think ill just hold out then. but thats an excellent offer as the trial ends as Vista releases in Feb! And I just know FSX will be able to run on high w/ autogen when I can get that 64bit program as it runs so nice now oh high w/no auto gen with the amd 64x2. I cant stress enough everyone. If your looking at a cheap upgrade that works great...Get the gateway GT5228 and upgrade to a nvidia 7900gs. All together its $900 and upgrades free to vista premium. (compusa has 6 months no payment with same as cash option too for those who can)
